{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-216b.0425","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 216B.0425","heading":"Certification designations for stroke care for acute care hospitals and","body":"stroke centers.\n(1) Except as otherwise provided, for purposes of this section:\n(a) \"Acute care hospital\" means a licensed facility providing inpatient and\noutpatient m edical or surgical services to an individual that seeks care and\ntreatment, regardless of the individual's ability to pay for services, on an\nimmediate and emergent basis through an established emergency department\nand a continuous treatment basis on its p remises for more than twenty -four\n(24) hours; and\n(b) \"Acute stroke ready hospital certification,\" \"primary stroke center\ncertification,\" \"thrombectomy -capable stroke center certification,\" and\n\"comprehensive stroke center certification\" mean certification  for acute care\nhospitals issued by the Joint Commission, the American Heart Association, or\nanother cabinet -approved nationally recognized organization that provides\ndisease-specific certification for stroke care, that:\n1. Complies with census-based national standards and safety goals;\n2. Effectively uses evidence -based clinical practice guidelines to manage\nand optimize care; and\n3. Uses an organized approach to measure performance.\n(2) The secretary of the Cabinet for Health and Family Services shall des ignate as a\ncertified stroke center any acute care hospital which has received an acute stroke\nready hospital certification, a primary stroke center certification, a thrombectomy -\ncapable stroke center, or a comprehensive stroke center certification.\n(3) The secretary shall suspend or revoke an acute care hospital's designation as an\nacute stroke ready hospital, a primary stroke center, a thrombectomy -capable stroke\ncenter, or a comprehensive stroke center if certification is withdrawn by the Joint\nCommission, the American Heart Association, or another cabinet -approved\ncertifying organization.\n(4) (a) The cabinet shall maintain a list of certified acute stroke ready hospitals,\nprimary stroke centers, thrombectomy -capable stroke centers, and\ncomprehensive stro ke centers and post the list on its Web site. The cabinet\nshall provide the list and periodic updates to the Kentucky Board of\nEmergency Medical Services.\n(b) The Kentucky Board of Emergency Medical Services shall share the list with\neach local emergency m edical services provider at least annually, and as new\ncenters and hospitals are designated and certified.","path":["KRS Chapter 216B"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=52565","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:52:23Z","sha256":"b01426d2677ecdd4625213caada2f6e8d7bb5a445f461a4a7768d4f87da67871","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-216b.0422","next":"us-ky/krs-216b.0431"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
