{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-227a.030","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 227A.030","heading":"Limitations on applicability of KRS 227A.010 to 227A.140.","body":"(1) The provisions of KRS 227A.010 to 227A.140 shall not apply to installations under\nthe exclusive control of electric utilities for the purpose of communication,\nmetering, or for the generation, control, transformation, transmission, and\ndistribution of elec tric energy located in buildings used exclusively by utilities for\nthose purposes or located outdoors on property owned or leased by the utility or on\npublic highways, streets, or roads, or outdoors by established rights on private\nproperty.\n(2) Nothing in KRS 227A.010 to 227A.140 shall require that a maintenance worker or\nmaintenance engineer performing routine maintenance of electrical systems be\nlicensed.\n(3) Nothing in KRS 227A.010 to 227A.140 shall prohibit or interfere with the ability of\na homeowner or farmer to install or repair electrical wiring on his or her real\nproperty.\n(4) Nothing in KRS 227A.010 to 227A.140 shall require that a retailer or its agent\nengaged in making installations of an appliance purchased at a retail establishment\nbe licensed.\n(5) Nothing in KRS 227A.010 to 227A.140 shall be construed to require persons\nmaking installations exempt by KRS 227.460 to be licensed or to work for a\nlicensed person.\n(6) Nothing in KRS 227A.010 to 227A.140 shall preclude the use of unlicensed,\nnonresident electricians in temporary, emergency, or industrial shutdown situations.\nThose unlicensed, nonresident electricians shall apply for an electrician's license or\na master electrician's license after they are employed and engaged in electrical work\nin t he Commonwealth of Kentucky for a period of ten (10) days. No unlicensed,\nnonresident electrician shall be employed or engaged in electrical work in the\nCommonwealth of Kentucky for a total of more than thirty (30) days in any calendar\nyear without applyin g for an electrician's license or a master electrician's license.\nThe license shall be obtained by the temporary, unlicensed, nonresident electricians\nwithin sixty (60) days of securing employment.\n(7) Nothing in KRS 227A.010 to 227A.140 shall apply to a p erson performing work at\na surface or underground coal mine or at a coal preparation plant.\n(8) Nothing in KRS 227A.010 to 227A.140 shall apply to a person performing work for\na telecommunications company for which the voltage is fifty (50) volts or less.\n(9) Nothing in KRS 227A.010 to 227A.140 shall prohibit a factory -authorized\nrepresentative from the installation, maintenance, or service of a medical equipment\ndevice. This exemption does not include work providing electrical feeds into the\npower distribu tion unit or installation of conduits and raceways. This exemption\ncovers only those factory engineers or third-party service companies with equivalent\ntraining who are qualified to perform such service.\n(10) Nothing in KRS 227A.010 to 227A.140 shall apply  to low-voltage, power-limited\ninstallations for control or coordination of interconnected devices separated from a\npower source by a Class 2 or Class 3 transformer installed by a person licensed as:\n(a) A master or journeyman heating, ventilation, and air  conditioning technician\nemployed by a licensed HVAC contractor pursuant to KRS 198B.658;\n(b) A fire protection sprinkler contractor pursuant to KRS 198B.560;\n(c) A manufactured housing dealer or certified installer pursuant to KRS 227.610;\n(d) A boiler mechanic pursuant to KRS 236.210;\n(e) A master or journeyman plumber pursuant to KRS 318.030;\n(f) An onsite sewage disposal system installer pursuant to KRS 211.357; or\n(g) An electrician or  master electrician employed by an electrical contractor\npursuant to KRS 227A.010 to 227A.140.\n(11) The provisions of KRS 227A.010 to 227A.140 shall not apply to work performed at\nindustrial manufacturing facilities or natural gas pipeline facilities by em ployees of\nthose facilities.\n(12) Notwithstanding subsection (6) of this section, KRS 227A.010 to 227A.140 shall\nnot apply to a disaster response employee as defined in KRS 141.010 who is\nlicensed as an electrician or master electrician in another state.\n(13) KRS 227A.010 to 227A.140 shall not apply to a disaster response business as\ndefined in KRS 141.010 that is licensed as an electrical contractor in another state.","path":["KRS Chapter 227A"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=50964","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:52:44Z","sha256":"01972cae717f13621b52e8ed846fbbc407471ad5c1cfd3c48dcdc16d4a1de952","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-227a.020","next":"us-ky/krs-227a.040"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
