{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-227a.060","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 227A.060","heading":"Qualifications for licensure -- Provisional license.","body":"(1) The department shall issue a license as an \"electrical contractor\" to an applicant\nwho meets the following requirements:\n(a) Has paid to the department the application fee not to exceed two hundred\ndollars ($200) and the appropriate examination fee, which shall not exceed the\nactual cost of examination;\n(b) Has achieved a passing score, as set by the department, on all portions of the\nexamination required by the department. The department shall promulgate\nadministrative regulations to specify who shall take  the examination if the\napplicant is a business entity; and\n(c) Has submitted proof that he or she has complied with workers' compensation\nand unemployment insurance laws and administrative regulations and has\nobtained a general liability insurance policy of not less than one million\ndollars ($1,000,000).\n(2) The department shall issue a license as a \"master electrician\" to an applicant who\nmeets the following requirements:\n(a) Has paid to the department the application fee not to exceed one hundred\ndollars ($100) and the appropriate examination fee not to exceed the actual\ncost of the examination;\n(b) Has completed sixteen thousand (16,000) hours of verifiable experience in the\nelectrical trade since his or her sixteenth birthday, except as follows:\n1. Completion of any of the following shall substitute for four thousand\n(4,000) hours of verifiable experience in the electrical trade:\na. A training course in electrical work, acceptable to the department;\nor\nb. Two (2) years of teaching electrical technology or a related field at\nan accredited college or university; and\n2. Completion of an associate's degree or diploma program in electrical\ntechnology or a related field at a college within the Kentucky\nCommunity and Technical College System or at an accredited college or\nuniversity shall substitute for six thousand (6,000) hours of verifiable\nexperience in the electrical trade; and\n(c) Has achieved a passing score, as set by the department, on all portions of the\nexamination required by the department.\n(3) The department shall issue a license as an \"electrician\" to an applicant who meets\nthe following requirements:\n(a) Has paid to the department the application fee not to exceed fifty dollars ($50)\nand the appropriate examination fee not to exceed the actual cost of the\nexamination administered by the department;\n(b) Has completed eight thousand (8,000) hours of verifiable experience in the\nelectrical trade since his or her sixteenth birthday. Completion of any one (1)\nof the following shall substitute for four thousand (4,000) hours of verifiable\nexperience in the electrical trade:\n1. A training course in electrical work, acceptable to the department;\n2. Two (2) years of a minimum four (4) year training course in electrical\nwork, acceptable to the department, with completion of the remaining\nyears of that training course within four (4) years of obtaining the\nelectrician license, or the electrician license shall be revoked;\n3. An associate's degree or diploma program in electrical technology or a\nrelated field at a college within the Kentucky Community and Technical\nCollege System or at an accredited college or university; or\n4. Two (2) years of  teaching electrical technology or a related field at an\naccredited college or university; and\n(c) Has achieved a passing score, as set by the department, on all portions of the\nexamination required and administered by the department.\n(4) (a) All or part o f the experience requirements for licensing under subsection (2)\nor (3) of this section may be met through applicable supervised military\noccupational specialty experience while serving in the United States Armed\nForces, including but not limited to electr ical engineering, electrical power\nproduction, electrical repair or maintenance, utilities, electronic systems repair\nor maintenance, or aircraft electrician experience.\n(b) The department shall promulgate administrative regulations pursuant to KRS\nChapter 13A that establish an application form for the use of military\nexperience to apply toward licensure experience under subsection (2) or (3) of\nthis section. As part of the application process, the applicant shall be required\nto provide:\n1. A copy of the ap plicant's DD-214 form showing the applicant's military\noccupational specialty; or\n2. A signed statement by the applicant's commanding officer, on a form\nprovided by the department, attesting to the fact that the applicant meets\nthe experience requirements of this section.\n(5) (a) The department shall issue a nonrenewable provisional license as an\n\"electrician\" to an applicant who has completed at least six (6) years of\nverifiable experience and has worked two thousand eighty (2,080) hours a\nyear for those s ix (6) years in the electrical trade since the applicant's\nsixteenth birthday.\n(b) A nonrenewable provisional license issued to an applicant under paragraph (a)\nof this subsection shall be valid for a period not to exceed one (1) year from\nthe date of issuance.\n(c) The department shall issue a license as an electrician to a provisional license\nholder who has, prior to the expiration of the one (1) year term of the\nprovisional license:\n1. Achieved a passing score on all portions of the examination required\nand administered by the department under subsection (3)(c) of this\nsection;\n2. Paid to the department the application fee not to exceed fifty dollars\n($50) per year; and\n3. Paid to the department the examination fee not to exceed the actual cost\nof the examination.\n(d) If a provisional license holder does not achieve a passing score on all portions\nof the examination required and administered under subsection (3)(c) of this\nsection prior to the expiration of the one (1) year term of the provisional\nlicense, the provisional license shall expire and the provisional license holder\nshall be ineligible for any additional provisional licenses.
