{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-237.122","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 237.122","heading":"Program for certification of firearms instructors for concealed deadly","body":"weapon program -- Qualification and certification requirements -- In-service\ntraining -- Fees.\n(1) The Department of Criminal Justice Training shall operate and maintain a pro gram\nfor certification of firearms instructors for the concealed deadly weapon training\nprogram. Only the General Assembly may eliminate the certified firearms instructor\nprogram.\n(2) Training courses for certification of firearms instructors shall be cond ucted by\nfirearms instructor trainers and the department.\n(3) An applicant to be a firearms instructor shall hold a concealed deadly weapon\nlicense issued pursuant to KRS 237.110, and successfully complete a firearms\ninstructor training course of not more than sixteen (16) hours provided by a certified\nfirearms instructor trainer.\n(4) Certification as a firearms instructor shall be valid for a period of three (3) years\nduring which an instructor shall:\n(a) Conduct or assist in at least one (1) applicant training course;\n(b) Attend an instructor trainer/instructor in -service training course of not more\nthan four (4) hours conducted by the department; and\n(c) Not have become ineligible to be a firearms instructor.\n(5) The department shall conduct in -service training for firearms instructor trainers and\ncertified firearms instructors as specified in KRS 237.120.\n(6) At the end of the certification period, the department shall issue a new firearms\ninstructor certification to any person who has completed the provi sions of this\nsection, unless the firearms instructor notifies the department in writing that he or\nshe desires not to be recertified or is otherwise ineligible to be recertified. There\nshall be no charge for recertification. A firearms instructor who has permitted his or\nher certification to expire may take the in -service course and be recertified for a\nperiod of one hundred eighty (180) days from the date of expiration of the\ncertification without having to repeat the requirements of subsection (3) of thi s\nsection.\n(7) An instructor trainer shall charge a fee not to exceed one hundred fifty dollars\n($150) for a training course for a certified firearms instructor. The instructor shall\nremit fifty dollars ($50) to the department to defray the cost of materia ls which the\ndepartment shall provide to the instructor.\n(8) No firearms instructor trainer or certified firearms instructor shall charge a fee in\nexcess of seventy-five dollars ($75) for the conduct of an applicant training course.\nAn instructor trainer o r certified firearms instructor may charge a student the actual\ncost of range use, targets and associated range materials, and classroom rental not to\nexceed ten dollars ($10) for all of the items specified in this subsection. The\ninstructor trainer or certified firearms instructor shall remit twenty-five dollars ($25)\nper student to the department to cover the provision of training materials distributed\nand providing evidence of successful completion of the course.\n(9) No portion of a fee collected pursuan t to this section shall be refunded to a student\nwho fails or does not complete the required course of instruction.","path":["KRS Chapter 237"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=47040","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:52:50Z","sha256":"103c560a3e3f0d2645aede7895681eb231912dc37534804c4918a7400e57f364","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-237.120","next":"us-ky/krs-237.124"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
