{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-248.520","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 248.520","heading":"Duties of board.","body":"The Kentucky Tobacco Research Board shall:\n(1) Formulate policies and procedures as necessary to carry out the provisions of KRS\n248.510 to 248.570.\n(2) Promulgate rules and regulations as necessary to carry out the provisions of KRS\n248.510 to 248.570 and to ensure proper expenditure of state funds ap propriated for\nthe purposes of KRS 248.510 to 248.570.\n(3) Review and authorize research projects and programs to be undertaken and financed\nunder the provisions of KRS 248.510 to 248.570.\n(a) The facilities designated the Tobacco and Health Research Insti tute before\nJuly 15, 2002, shall be retained and operated by the University of Kentucky\nexclusively for the program and activities described in KRS 248.580.\n(b) In addition to the research and development funded by authority of the\nKentucky Tobacco Researc h Board, the board is authorized to allow other\nresearch operations having related or complementary interests to share this\nphysical facility with the Kentucky Tobacco Research and Development\nCenter, subject to approval of the board.\n(4) Review and approv e all progress and final research reports on projects authorized\nunder the provisions of KRS 248.510 to 248.570.\n(5) Ensure that state funds, appropriated by KRS 248.510 to 248.570 or any other act\nfor tobacco research, are not diverted to any other use an d that all authorized\nresearch projects are directed toward:\n(a) Preserving and strengthening tobacco agriculture in Kentucky;\n(b) Facilitating the progress of commercial endeavors in crop agriculture which\nhave potential to provide entirely new market opp ortunities for tobacco\ngrowers; and\n(c) Applying, when appropriate, previously authorized research initially\nconducted with tobacco to other plants which might be grown commercially in\nKentucky, thus obtaining the fullest possible practical benefit from th e\nresearch progress.\n(6) Provide the Governor, the General Assembly, and the Legislative Research\nCommission an annual report by January 30 of each year showing the status of\nfunds appropriated under KRS 248.510 to 248.570 for tobacco research and the\nprogress of the board in terms of the results of its tobacco research efforts.\n(7) Advise the General Assembly by January 30 during each even -numbered-year\nregular session of the need for continuation of the Kentucky Tobacco Research\nBoard and the tax levied b y Chapter 255 of the Acts of 1970 for the purpose of\nfinancing tobacco and related new crops research programs as provided by KRS\n248.510 to 248.570.\n(8) Approve and release public statements relating to the progress and results of\nresearch projects.","path":["KRS Chapter 248"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=11951","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:53:01Z","sha256":"ab0e87d0209050b8aa5f25d0010cd545d465db8380989244f3d689a51482c2f4","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-248.510","next":"us-ky/krs-248.530"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
