{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-257.010","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 257.010","heading":"Definitions for chapter.","body":"As used in this chapter, unless the context requires otherwise:\n(1) \"Abandon\" means to forsake entirely, or to neglect or refuse to provide or perform\nthe legal obligations for care and support of an animal by its owner or his agent;\n(2) \"Board\" means the Board of Agriculture;\n(3) \"Commission\" means the Kentucky Livestock Care Standards Commission;\n(4) \"Commissioner\" means the Commissioner of Agriculture;\n(5) \"Communicable disease\" means a disease that can be directly or indirectly\ntransmitted from one (1) animal to another;\n(6) \"Compost\" means the humus -like product of the process of composting domestic\nlivestock, poultry, or fish, which may be used as a soil conditioner or enhancer;\n(7) \"Composting\" means the biological decomposition of organic matter;\n(8) \"Council\" means the Kentucky Equine Health and Welfare Council;\n(9) \"Department\" means the Department of Agriculture;\n(10) \"Fish\" means the bodies and parts of bodies of all animal aquatic life being raised,\nor kept for sale to a wholesaler or retailer, or for direct sale to the public;\n(11) \"Livestock\" means:\n(a) Cattle, sheep, swine, goats, horses, llamas, buffaloes, or any other animals of\nthe bovine, ovine, porcine, caprine, equine, or camelid species; and\n(b) Deer, elk, and any other animal of the cervid species whose regulatory\nrequirements are under KRS Chapters 150 and 246, and are privately owned\nand raised in a confined area for breeding stock, food, fiber, and other\nproducts;\n(12) \"National animal identif ication system\" means a national program intended to\nidentify animals and track them as they come into contact with or commingle with\nanimals other than herdmates from their premises of origin;\n(13) \"National Poultry Improvement Plan\" shall have the same m eaning as set out in the\nUnited States Code of Federal Regulations, 9 C.F.R. Part 145, and the auxiliary\nprovisions in 9 C.F.R. Part 147;\n(14) \"Owner\" means any person owning or leasing from another, or having in charge any\ndomestic animal;\n(15) \"Poultry\" means chickens, ducks, turkeys, or other domestic fowl being raised or\nkept on any premises in the Commonwealth;\n(16) \"Premises\" means any portion of land, or any structure erected on land; and\n(17) \"Reportable disease\" means an animal disease that shall b e reported to state or\nfederal animal health officials when suspected or diagnosed.","path":["KRS Chapter 257"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=12340","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:53:06Z","sha256":"886355a0c79157dce2385081bd67a818f8c60919dc657224fd881f716bd466b4","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-256.990","next":"us-ky/krs-257.020"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
