{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-257.160","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 257.160","heading":"Disposition of carcasses -- How and when made.","body":"(1) All carcasses of domestic livestock, poultry, and fish which have died or which\nhave been destroyed on account of any disease, except as determined and permitted\nby the state veterinarian or other representative of the board, shall be disposed of\nby:\n(a) Complete incineration of the entire carcass and all of its parts and products;\n(b) Boiling the carcass and all of its parts and products in water or heating it with\nsteam at a temperature above boiling, continuously for two (2) hours or more;\n(c) Burying the carcass and all of its parts and products in the earth at a point\nwhich is never covered with the overflow of ponds or streams and which is\nnot less than one hundred (100) feet distant from any watercourse, sinkhole,\nwell, spring, public highway, residen ce, or stable. The carcass shall be placed\nin an opening in the earth at least four (4) feet deep, the abdominal and\nthoracic cavities opened wide their entire length with a sharp instrument, and\nthe entire carcass covered with two (2) inches of quicklime and at least three\n(3) feet of earth.\n(d) Removal of the carcass by a duly-licensed rendering establishment;\n(e) Deposition of the carcass in a contained landfill approved pursuant to KRS\nChapter 224;\n(f) Composting of the carcass in a facility according t o the board's administrative\nregulations and approved in accordance with KRS Chapter 224;\n(g) Any combination of the methods set forth in paragraphs (a) to (f) of this\nsubsection; or\n(h) Any other scientifically-proven method of disposal approved by the board.\n(2) The owner shall dispose of the carcass of domestic livestock, poultry, and fish as\nprovided in subsection (1) of this section, within forty -eight (48) hours after the\ncarcass is found unless the carcass is otherwise preserved in cold storage.\n(3) The board is authorized to promulgate administrative regulations to implement this\nsection.","path":["KRS Chapter 257"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=12358","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:53:06Z","sha256":"040cbd22eb052c42d47d645c70b73aaca9f05593721502757acf52c272daf285","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-257.150","next":"us-ky/krs-257.170"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
