{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-258.195","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 258.195","heading":"Employment, appointment, or contract with animal control officers --","body":"Establishment and maintenance of animal shelters -- Intergovernmental\nagreements -- Authority of animal control officers.\n(1) The governing body of each county shall employ, appoint,  or contract with an\nanimal control officer, or shall contract with an entity that employs, appoints, or\ncontracts with an animal control officer, and shall establish and maintain an animal\nshelter as a means of facilitating and administering KRS 258.095 t o 258.500. One\n(1) or more counties may enter into intergovernmental agreements for the\nestablishment of regional animal shelters, or may contract with entities authorized\nto maintain sheltering and animal control services. Animal shelters shall meet the\nstandards provided by KRS 258.119(3)(b) within three (3) years after July 13, 2004.\nGoverning bodies may adopt additional standards and ordinances related to public\nhealth, safety, enforcement, and the efficient and appropriate operation of their\nshelters and their animal control programs.\n(2) Cities may employ, appoint, or contract with animal control officers, or may\ncontract with an entity that employs, appoints, or contracts with animal control\nofficers, for the enforcement of this chapter and local anim al control ordinances\nwithin their corporate limits. Cities may enter into agreements with the counties for\nthe enforcement of the county's animal control ordinances. The agreement shall\ninclude, but shall not necessarily be limited to, setting out the jur isdiction and the\nduties of the animal control officer respective to the agreement.\n(3) Animal control officers shall have the authority to issue uniform citations, local\ncitations, or local notices for the enforcement of the provisions of this chapter, th e\nprovisions of the Kentucky Revised Statutes relating to cruelty, mistreatment, or\ntorture of animals, and animal control ordinances in their respective jurisdictions.","path":["KRS Chapter 258"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=12452","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:53:07Z","sha256":"cd61eccb7d98a287df48166e90f318877d5a429b9cdd356887c7892d2d5c2a59","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-258.190","next":"us-ky/krs-258.200"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
