{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-258.265","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 258.265","heading":"Care and control of dog -- Destruction of dog running at large at night --","body":"Exemption for working or hunting activities.\n(1) An owner shall exercise proper care and control of his or her dog to prevent the dog\nfrom violating any local government nuisance ordinance.\n(2) Any peace officer or animal control officer may seize or destroy any dog found\nrunning at large between the hours of sunset and sunrise, unaccompanied, and not\nunder the control of its owner or handler. A peace officer or animal control officer\nshall be under a duty to make a fair and reasonable effort to determine whether any\ndog found at large between sunset and sunrise is a working livestock dog, hound, or\nother hunting dog which has become lost temporarily from a pack or wande red\nfrom immediate control of its owner or handler, and if he or she is reasonably sure\nthat the dog is a working livestock dog or hunting dog, then he or she shall not\ndestroy the dog unless it is found in the act of pursuing or wounding livestock,\nwounding or killing poultry, or attacking human beings.\n(3) A working livestock dog, hound, or hunting dog may be unrestrained when engaged\nin lawful working or hunting activities while on private or public property\ndesignated or authorized for that purpose.","path":["KRS Chapter 258"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=57384","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:53:07Z","sha256":"43521aaa20a2c4591b5bc5e5c89cec37204afdc994d1bd914f6504a1b812eb47","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-258.260","next":"us-ky/krs-258.270"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
