{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-261.200","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 261.200","heading":"Definitions for chapter.","body":"As used in this chapter, unless the context requires otherwise:\n(1) \"Department\" means the Kentucky Department of Agriculture;\n(2) \"Commissioner\" means the Commissioner of Agriculture;\n(3) \"Board\" means the State Board of Agriculture;\n(4) \"Stockyard\" means a facility regulated by:\n(a) The  United States Secretary of Agriculture under the Packers and\nStockyards Act, 1921  (42 Stat. 159), as amended,  and regulations\npromulgated under these statutes by the Secretary of Agriculture; or\n(b) The  department under this chapter and  administrative regulations\npromulgated under this chapter.\nA stockyard includes any place, establishment, or facility commonly known as\na stockyard, which is conducted, operated, or managed  for profit or nonprofit\nas  a public market for livestock producers, feeders, market agencies, and\nbuyers, consisting of pens or other enclosures and their appurtenances, in\nwhich livestock are received, held, or kept for sale or shipment in commerce;\n(5) \"Buying station\" means a facility that is conducted, operated, or managed  as a\nprivate livestock market that offers stockyard services;\n(6) \"Stockyard services\" means  services or facilities furnished at a stockyard or\nbuying station in connection with the:\n(a) Receiving, buying, or selling of livestock in commerce  on a commission\nbasis or otherwise; or\n(b) Marketing, feeding, watering, holding, delivering, shipping, weighing, or\nhandling of livestock in commerce;\n(7) \"Owner  or operator\" means  persons responsible for the operation of each\nindividual stockyard or buying station;\n(8) \"Market agency\" means a person engaged in the business of:\n(a) Buying or selling livestock in commerce on a commission basis; or\n(b) Furnishing stockyard services;\n(9) \"Livestock dealer\" means any person, not a market agency, who:\n(a) Is regularly engaged  in the business of buying or selling livestock in\ncommerce,  either on his or her own account or as the employee or agent\nof the vendor or purchaser; or\n(b) Owns  or operates a buying station; and\n(10) \"Livestock\" means  cattle, sheep, swine, goats, horses, alpacas, llamas,\nbuffaloes, or other animals of the bovine, ovine, porcine, caprine, equine, or\ncamelid species.","path":["KRS Chapter 261"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=46659","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:53:10Z","sha256":"0e528cb04cda2e0ca9fa6b41be4bfc178c50ad8b515749f39ecd52ef41b2eea9","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-261.130","next":"us-ky/krs-261.210"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
