{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-281a.120","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 281A.120","heading":"Issuance of commercial learner's permit.","body":"(1) A commercial learner's permit may be issued to an individual twenty-one (21) years\nand older who:\n(a) Has complied with the criminal history background check required by KRS\n281A.300;\n(b) Holds a valid Kentucky Class D operator's license;\n(c) Is a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, or can provide to the\ncabinet documentation issued by the United States Citizenship and\nImmigration Services in the United States Department of Homeland Security,\nauthorizing the person to be in the United States  and to be employed while in\nthe United States; and\n(d) Has passed the vision and knowledge tests required for a commercial driver's\nlicense of the class vehicle to be driven. Commercial learner's permits shall be\nclass specific.\n(2) A commercial learner's  permit may be issued to a resident eighteen (18) years of\nage who:\n(a) Has complied with the criminal history background check required by KRS\n281A.300;\n(b) Holds a valid Kentucky Class D operator's license;\n(c) Is a citizen or permanent resident of the U nited States, or can provide to the\ncabinet documentation issued by the United States Citizenship and\nImmigration Services in the United States Department of Homeland Security,\nauthorizing the person to be in the United States and to be employed while in\nthe United States; and\n(d) Has passed the vision and knowledge tests required for a commercial driver's\nlicense of the class vehicle to be driven.\nA commercial learner's permit issued under this subsection shall be valid only for\nthe operation of a commercial motor vehicle in intrastate commerce that is not a\nschool bus or a vehicle hauling hazardous material. The CLP shall be class specific\nand shall contain a \"K\" restriction noting that the commercial driver is limited to\nKentucky intrastate commerce.\n(3) A commercial learner's permit shall not be issued to a resident for a period to\nexceed one hundred eighty (180) days. Only one (1) renewal or reis suance may be\ngranted within a two (2) year period for the same class of vehicle. The holder of a\ncommercial learner's permit may, unless otherwise disqualified, drive a commercial\nmotor vehicle on the highways of Kentucky only when accompanied by the hold er\nof a commercial driver's license valid for the type of vehicle driven and who\noccupies a seat beside the permit holder for the purpose of giving instruction in\ndriving the commercial motor vehicle.\n(4) A commercial learner's permit shall contain the sam e elements and meet the same\nrequirements as those for commercial driver's licenses set forth in KRS 281A.170.","path":["KRS Chapter 281A"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=55027","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:53:35Z","sha256":"61e37ecef9642ef2a680848a33d16eff395e301b77ba6a162feb6698a203dcbb","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-281a.110","next":"us-ky/krs-281a.130"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
