{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-311.858","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 311.858","heading":"Services and procedures that may be performed by physician assistant --","body":"Restrictions.\n(1) A physician assistant may perform medical services and procedures within the\nscope of medical services and procedures described in the supervision a greement\nunder KRS 311.854.\n(2) A physician assistant may initiate evaluation and treatment in emergency situations\nwithout specific approval.\n(3) A physician assistant may prescribe and administer all nonscheduled legend drugs\nand medical devices to the e xtent approved by the supervising physician. A\nphysician assistant who is approved and has prescribing authority may request,\nreceive, sign for, and distribute professional samples of nonscheduled legend drugs\nto patients.\n(4) (a) A physician assistant who  has been approved by the board pursuant to\nparagraph (b) of this subsection, may prescribe and administer Schedules II,\nIII, IV, and V controlled substances, as described in KRS Chapter 218A, to\nthe extent approved by the supervising physician and as perm itted under\nparagraphs (c), (d), (e), and (f) of this subsection.\n(b) Before a physician assistant engages in prescribing or administering\ncontrolled substances, the physician assistant shall:\n1. Have at least one (1) year of experience as a licensed and p racticing\nphysician assistant;\n2. Submit to the board a completed application for prescriptive authority\nfor controlled substances signed by the physician assistant's supervising\nphysician in accordance with KRS 311.856;\n3. Receive from the board, or its executive director, a notice that the\napplication for prescriptive authority has been approved; and\n4. Obtain a Controlled Substance Registration Certificate through the\nUnited States Drug Enforcement Administration and regis ter with the\nelectronic system for monitoring controlled substances established in\nKRS 218A.202 and any other applicable state controlled substance\nregulatory authority.\n(c) Prescriptions issued by a physician assistant for narcotic Schedule II\ncontrolled substances classified under KRS 218A.060, except for\nhydrocodone combination products as defined in KRS 218A.010, shall be\nlimited to a seventy-two (72) hour supply without any refill.\n(d) Prescriptions issued by a physician assistant for hydrocodone combi nation\nproducts as defined in KRS 218A.010, nonnarcotic Schedule II controlled\nsubstances, and Schedule III controlled substances, as defined in KRS\n218A.060 and 218A.080, shall be limited to a thirty (30) day supply without\nany refill.\n(e) Prescriptions issued by a physician assistant for Schedule IV or V controlled\nsubstances, as defined in KRS 218A.100 and 218A.120, shall be limited to the\noriginal prescription and refills not to exceed a six (6) month supply.\n(f) Notwithstanding paragraph (e) of this su bsection, prescriptions issued by a\nphysician assistant for benzodiazepines or Carisoprodol shall be limited to a\nthirty (30) day supply without any refill.\n(5) A physician assistant shall not submit direct billing for medical services and\nprocedures performed by the physician assistant.\n(6) A physician assistant may perform local infiltrative anesthesia under the provisions\nof subsection (1) of this section, but a physician assistant shall not administer or\nmonitor general or regional anesthesia unless the  requirements of KRS 311.862 are\nmet.\n(7) A physician assistant may perform services in the offices or clinics of the\nsupervising physician. A physician assistant may also render services in hospitals or\nother licensed health care facilities only with writ ten permission of the facility's\ngoverning body, and the facility may restrict the physician assistant's scope of\npractice within the facility as deemed appropriate by the facility.\n(8) A physician assistant shall not practice medicine or osteopathy indepe ndently.
