{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-311.900","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 311.900","heading":"Definitions for KRS 311.900 to 311.928.","body":"As used in KRS 311.900 to 311.928:\n(1) \"Athlete\" means an individual, referee, coach, or athletic staff member who\nparticipates in sports, games, or recreational activities requiring physical strength,\nagility, flexibility, range of motion, speed, or stamina;\n(2) \"Athletic injury\" means:\n(a) An injury or condition, excluding medical conditions such as internal\ninfections, internal injuries, fractures, and spinal cord injuries except in an\nacute situation sustained by an athlete that affects the individual's participation\nor performance in sports, games, or recreation; or\n(b) An injury or condition that is within the scope of practice of an athletic trainer\nidentified by a physician licensed under this chapter, a physical therapist\nlicensed under KRS Chapter 327, an occupational therapist licensed under\nKRS Chapter 319A, or a chiropractor licensed under KRS Chapter 312 that is\nlikely to benefit from athletic training services that have been approved by a\nphysician supervising the athletic trainer;\n(3) \"Athletic trainer\" means a healthcare provider with specific qualifications, as set\nforth in KRS 311.900 to 311.928, who is licensed to practice athletic training and\nwho, upon the supervision of a physician licensed under this chapter, carries out the\npractice of  preventing, recognizing, evaluating, managing, disposing, treating,\nreconditioning, or rehabilitating athletic injuries. In carrying out these functions, the\nlicensed athletic trainer may use physical modalities, such as heat, light, sound,\ncold, or elect ricity, or mechanical devices. A licensed athletic trainer shall practice\nonly in those areas in which he or she is competent by reason of his or her training,\nexperience, and certifications, including treatment of an injury or condition that is\nwithin the  scope of practice of an athletic trainer and approved by a physician\nlicensed under this chapter;\n(4) \"Board\" means the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure;\n(5) \"Council\" means the Kentucky Athletic Trainers Advisory Council;\n(6) \"Supervising physician\" means a physician licensed by the board; and\n(7) \"Supervision\" means advising, consenting to, and directing the activities of an\nathletic trainer through written or oral orders by a physician licensed to practice\nunder this chapter.
