{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-311a.140","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 311A.140","heading":"Emergency medical technicians -- Administrative regulations -- Renewal","body":"of certification and licensure -- Paramedics to be certified as emergency\nmedical technicians.\n(1) The board shall promulgate administrative regulations relating to emergen cy\nmedical technicians. The administrative regulations may include the classification\nand certification of emergency medical technicians, instructors, instructor -trainers,\nand students and trainees; examinations; standards of training and experience;\ncurricula standards; issuance or renewal of certificates; hearing of appeals; and\nother administrative regulations as may be necessary for the protection of public\nhealth and safety in the delivery of emergency medical services. No additional\ntesting or examina tions shall be required for recertification, except for proficiency\ntesting of new skills or knowledge, or areas in which there is documented evidence\nof deterioration of skills.\n(2) Recertification programs shall be organized to include continuing educati on and in-\nservice training approved by the board.\n(3) An applicant for initial certification as an emergency medical responder, emergency\nmedical technician, or advanced emergency medical technician, or licensure as a\nparamedic, shall be certified using th e requirements and testing established by the\nNational Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians or other agent chosen by the\nboard.\n(4) An applicant for certification renewal as an emergency medical responder,\nemergency medical technician, or advanced eme rgency medical technician, or\nrenewal of licensure as a paramedic, shall meet the educational requirements for\nrenewal of the appropriate certification or licensure credential as required by\nadministrative regulations promulgated by the board or the requirements established\nby the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians or other agent chosen\nby the board in lieu of the standards established by the board.\n(5) Except as provided in KRS 311A.060, the board shall not require any additional\ncourse work, in-service training, testing, or examinations of a person who chooses\nthe National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians or other agent chosen by\nthe board for certification or recertification as an emergency medical technician.\n(6) Any person licensed by the board as a paramedic shall be certified as an emergency\nmedical technician by the board. The certification shall be issued without fee,\nwithout additional training, in -service training, testing, or examination. The\nemergency medical technician c ertification shall be issued and expire at the same\ntime that the paramedic license is issued or expires, and if a paramedic voluntarily\ngives up his or her license prior to the expiration of his or her paramedic license, his\nor her emergency medical techn ician certification shall be unaffected thereby. If a\nparamedic chooses not to be relicensed as a paramedic but chooses to retain his\nemergency medical technician certification, the paramedic shall, prior to the\nexpiration of his paramedic license, complet e the requirements for recertification as\nan emergency medical technician utilizing one (1) of the methods provided for in\nthis section.\n(7) A paramedic whose license as a paramedic or certification as an emergency medical\ntechnician is suspended, revoked, or denied by the board shall have the same action\ntaken automatically with regard to his emergency medical technician certification or\nparamedic license.","path":["KRS Chapter 311A"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=48864","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:58:08Z","sha256":"03b860ce8c6310c4bafb41eaaadfdd8974520f85bbb11beb9a94c9cdc7b93999","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-311a.135","next":"us-ky/krs-311a.142"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
