{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-311b.020","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 311B.020","heading":"Definitions for chapter.","body":"As used in this chapter, unless the context clearly requires otherwise:\n(1) \"Accredited educational program\" means a program that is approved by a national\norganization acceptable to the board to provide education in medical imaging or\nradiation therapy;\n(2) \"Actively employed\" means an individual who is appropriately credentialed and\ncurrently employed as an advanced imaging professional, medical imaging\ntechnologist, radiation therapist, an educator or administrator in any of these\ndisciplines, or a limited X-ray machine operator;\n(3) \"Advanced imaging professional\" means an individual who is credentialed by a\nnationally recognized certification organization that is recognized by the board;\n(4) \"Authorized user\" means a physician, dentist, or podiatrist id entified on a\nradioactive materials license that authorizes the medical use of radioactive materials\nif the license was issued by:\n(a) The Cabinet for Health and Family Services;\n(b) The United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission; or\n(c) Another United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission agreement state;\n(5) \"Board\" means the Kentucky Board of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy;\n(6) \"Credentialed\" means someone who is certified and registered by an appropriate\nnational organization that is recognized by the board;\n(7) \"Continuing education\" means a learning activity that is planned, organized, and\nadministered to enhance the professio nal knowledge and skills of a licensed\nindividual of medical imaging or radiation therapy to provide services for patients,\nthe public, or the medical profession;\n(8) \"Licensed practitioner\" or \"licensed practitioner of the healing arts\" means a person\nlicensed in Kentucky to practice medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, chiropractic,\npodiatry, or veterinary medicine;\n(9) \"Limited X -ray machine operator\" means an individual who performs limited\nradiographic procedures that shall not include contrast studies, fl uoroscopy, nuclear\nmedicine, or radiation therapy procedures;\n(10) \"Medical imaging technologist\" means an individual who has completed an\naccredited educational program in radiography, nuclear medicine, or other imaging\nmodality recognized by the board an d who is licensed and granted privileges under\nthis chapter. An individual licensed as a medical imaging technologist or a limited\nX-ray machine operator shall be employed to perform medical imaging at a facility\nwhere contrast studies, fluoroscopy, nuclea r medicine, or radiation therapy\nprocedures are performed, but a limited X -ray machine operator may only perform\nlimited diagnostic radiography;\n(11) \"National organization\" means:\n(a) The American Society of Radiologic Technologists;\n(b) The Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board;\n(c) The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists;\n(d) The Society of Nuclear Medicine Technologist Section;\n(e) The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology;\n(f) The Joint Review Committee on Edu cational Programs in Nuclear Medicine\nTechnology;\n(g) The American College of Radiology; or\n(h) Another national organization recognized by the board;\n(12) \"Nuclear medicine technologist\" means an individual who is authorized to prepare\nand administer radiopharmaceuticals, pharmaceuticals, and radionuclides under the\ndirection of an authorized user to perform nuclear medicine procedures for\ndiagnostic and therapeutic purposes;\n(13) \"Post-primary certification\" means an individual who has primary certificati on and\nhas been awarded post -primary certification by a national organization that has\nbeen recognized by the board;\n(14) \"Primary certification\" means an individual who has successfully completed a\nformal educational program and certification in radiograp hy, nuclear medicine,\nradiation therapy, or other modality recognized by the board;\n(15) \"Radiation therapist\" means an individual who:\n(a) Has completed an accredited educational program in radiation therapy;\n(b) Is licensed by the board; and\n(c) Is authorized to utilize ionizing radiation-generating equipment and sources of\nradiation for the planning, localization, and delivery of therapeutic procedures\non human beings; and\n(16) \"Radiographer\" means an individual who is authorized to use ionizing radiatio n-\ngenerating equipment to perform a comprehensive scope of diagnostic imaging\nprocedures and is responsible for the operation of radiation -generating equipment,\nprotecting the patient and staff from unnecessary radiation, and selecting the\nappropriate expo sure to produce diagnostic images with the lowest reasonable\nexposure.","path":["KRS Chapter 311B"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=56479","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:58:08Z","sha256":"8712cb5e9693544f6ed4a904bb61e8045f82361c94bbfcf5d9ad9699690273cd","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-311b.010","next":"us-ky/krs-311b.030"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
