{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-314.073","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 314.073","heading":"Continuing competency requirements.","body":"(1) As a prerequisite for license renewal, all individuals licensed under provisions of\nthis chapter shall be required to document continuing competency during the\nimmediate past licensure period as prescribed in regulations promulgated by the\nboard.\n(2) The continuing competency requirement shall be documented and reported as set\nforth by the board in administrative regulations promulgated in accordance with\nKRS Chapter 13A.\n(3) The board shall approve providers of continuing education. The approval may\ninclude recognition of providers approved by national organizations and state\nboards of nursing with comparable standards. Standards for these approvals shall be\nset by the board in administrative regulations promulgated in accordance with the\nprovisions of KRS Chapter 13A.\n(4) The board shall work cooperatively with professional nursing organizations,\napproved nursing schools, and other potential sources of continuing education\nprograms to ensure that adequate continuing education offerings are available\nstatewide. The board may enter into contractual agreements to implement the\nprovisions of this section.\n(5) The board shall be responsible for notifying applicants for licensure and licensees\napplying for license renewal, of continuing competency requirements.\n(6) As a part of the continuing education requirements that the board adopts to ensure\ncontinuing competency of present and future licensees, the board shall ensure\npractitioners licensed under KRS Chapter 314 complete:\n(a) A one-time training course of at l east one and one -half (1.5) hours covering\nthe recognition and prevention of pediatric abusive head trauma, as defined in\nKRS 620.020; and\n(b) One (1) hour one (1) time every three (3) years covering the recognition and\nprevention of pediatric ingestion or inhalation of controlled substances.\nThe continuing education required under this subsection shall be included in the\ncurrent number of required continuing education hours.\n(7) As a part of the continuing education requirements that the board adopts to e nsure\ncontinuing competency of present and future licensees and the evolving needs of\nthe growing senior population, the board shall ensure practitioners licensed under\nKRS Chapter 314 complete a one (1) time course of one (1) hour of continuing\neducation approved by the board. The course shall be completed one (1) time and\ncount towards the current number of required continuing education hours, except\nthat graduating student practitioners may submit Alzheimer's and other forms of\ndementia course curriculum  taught in their programs of study towards the required\none (1) hour for approval. The course topics shall include but not be limited to:\n(a) The warning signs and symptoms of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of\ndementia;\n(b) The importance of early detection, diagnosis, and appropriate communication\ntechniques for discussion of memory concerns with the patient and his or her\ncaregiver;\n(c) Cognitive assessment and care planning billing codes;\n(d) The variety of tools used to assess a patient's cognition; and\n(e) Current treatments that may be available to the patient.\n(8) In order to offset administrative costs incurred in the implementation of the\nmandatory continuing competency requirements, the board may charge reasonable\nfees as established by regulation in accordance with the provisions of KRS Chapter\n13A.\n(9) The continuing competency requirements shall include at least five (5) contact\nhours in pharmacology continuing education for any person licensed as an\nadvanced practice registered nurse.","path":["KRS Chapter 314"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=57471","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:58:10Z","sha256":"ef7360be579e52c1e845638888ef4c84c51d0ed0ae86836cef1b1a6eb11150c4","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-314.071","next":"us-ky/krs-314.074"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
