{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-314a.100","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 314A.100","heading":"Scope of practice.","body":"(1) A respiratory care practitioner may perform respiratory care procedures under\nmedical direction with documented competency, in accordance with agency or\nfacility guidelines and only in accordance with the prescription of a physician. The\nprocedures shall i nclude, but not be limited to, the assessment and therapeutic use\nof the following: medical gases, exclusive of general anesthesia; aerosols,\nhumidification, environmental control systems; pharmacologic agents related to\ncardiopulmonary procedures, unless prohibited by the medical staff of the licensed\nhealth-care facility; mechanical or physiological ventilatory support;\nbronchopulmonary hygiene, maintenance of the natural airways; insertion without\ncutting tissues and maintenance of artificial airways; specific assessment and testing\nprocedures such as drawing and analyzing of arterial blood gases employed in the\nmedical measurement and monitoring of cardiac function as it relates to pulmonary\npathophysiology.\n(2) The practice of respiratory care may be pe rformed in hospitals or in other settings\nwhere respiratory care is to be provided in accordance with a prescription of a\nphysician. In addition, respiratory care may be provided during the transportation of\na patient, or under any circumstances where an e mergency necessitates respiratory\ncare.\n(3) The respiratory care practitioner may transcribe and implement a physician's written\nor verbal orders pertaining to the practice of respiratory care procedures as defined\nin this section.\n(4) The respiratory care practitioner's scope of practice shall include practice standards\nand guidelines as developed by the American Association for Respiratory Care, or\nits equivalent, and as incorporated by the board through promulgation of\nadministrative regulations in accordance with KRS Chapter 13A.","path":["KRS Chapter 314A"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=30974","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:58:11Z","sha256":"fdd12cc3f452ec3742373ce4cbc05fd5d9639da28d2cca5f50f87e7114d3f933","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-314a.010","next":"us-ky/krs-314a.105"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
