{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-317a.090","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 317A.090","heading":"Requirements for schools of cosmetology, esthetic practices, and nail","body":"technology.\nNo license shall be issued or renewed by the board to any cosmetology school or school\nof esthetic practices or school of nail technology unless such school provides:\n(1) The name of the proposed school;\n(2) A statement that the proposed school is authorized to operate educational programs\nbeyond secondary education;\n(3) As a prerequisite of graduation, a prescribed course of instruction of not less than\none thousand five hundred (1,500) hours for a cosmetology school or seven hundred\nfifty (750) hours for a school of esthetic practices, or four hundred fifty (450) hours\nfor a school of nail technology;\n(4) Courses of instruction in histology of the hair, skin,  nails, muscles, and nerves of\nthe face and neck; elementary chemistry with emphasis on sterilization, diseases of\nthe skin, hair, and glands, and massaging and manipulating of the muscles of the\nupper body; cutting, shaving, arranging, dressing, chemical treatment of the hair and\nsuch other courses as may be prescribed by administrative regulation of the board;\n(5) Facilities, equipment, materials, and qualified instructors and instructor training as\nmay be required by administrative regulations of the boa rd adopted pursuant to this\nchapter, but no cosmetology school or school of esthetic practices or school of nail\ntechnology shall have fewer than one (1) licensed instructor per twenty (20)\nstudents present for instruction;\n(6) No cosmetology school or sch ool of esthetic practices or school of nail technology,\nafter being licensed for the first time, shall serve the public until one hundred fifty\n(150) hours of instruction has been taught; and\n(7) In compliance with KRS 317A.070, the board may revoke or sus pend any license\nissued by it if, in the judgment of the board, the school is not following the\nrequirements as set out in this chapter or the school does not comply with the\nadministrative regulations promulgated by the board in order to regulate the conduct\nof the school and in order to supervise the proper education of the students.","path":["KRS Chapter 317A"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=53218","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:58:14Z","sha256":"c461023ea2b9e663f615a215d5459ed691c74771f20aa14d1fabff6e9b25afea","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-317a.080","next":"us-ky/krs-317a.100"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
