{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-322.040","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 322.040","heading":"Requirements for licensure as a professional engineer -- Education,","body":"experience -- Administrative regulations.\n(1) A person shall qualify for licensure as a professional engineer by meeting the\nrequirements set forth in paragraph (a) or (b) of this subsection.\n(a) A person shall qualify if he or she has:\n1. Graduated from one (1) of the following:\na. An engineering program of four (4) years or more accredited by\nthe Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation\nBoard for Engineering  and Technology or any engineering\nprogram deemed equivalent by the board; or\nb. A fire protection engineering technology program of four (4) years\nor more accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation\nCommission of the Accreditation Board for Eng ineering and\nTechnology with at least forty -five (45) college semester credit\nhours of engineering topics, including engineering science or\nengineering design courses;\n2. For an applicant qualifying for licensure pursuant to subparagraph 1.a.\nof this parag raph, four (4) or more additional years of progressive\nexperience in engineering or teaching of a grade and character which\nindicates to the board that the applicant is competent to practice\nengineering;\n3. For an applicant qualifying for licensure pursuan t to subparagraph 1.b.\nof this paragraph, the individual shall obtain six (6) or more additional\nyears of progressive experience in engineering or teaching of a grade\nand character that indicates to the board that the applicant is competent\nto practice fire protection engineering; and\n4. A passing score on:\na. The Principles and Practice of Engineering Examination; and\nb. The Fundamentals of Engineering Examination. The board may\nallow students enrolled in the final year of an undergraduate\nengineering program to take this examination. Upon passing the\nexamination, the applicant shall be designated an engineer in\ntraining.\n(b) If an instructor in an engineering program accredited by the Engineering\nAccreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and\nTechnology, a fire protection engineering technology program accredited by\nthe Engineering Technology Accre ditation Commission of the Accreditation\nBoard for Engineering and Technology, or an engineering program deemed\nequivalent by the board is not eligible for the exemption under subsection (2)\nof this section, the instructor shall have four (4) years from th e date of hire to\nqualify for licensure by showing that he or she has:\n1. Graduated from an engineering program of four (4) years or more\naccredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the\nAccreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, or a n engineering\nprogram deemed equivalent by the board;\n2. Four (4) or more additional years of progressive experience in\nengineering or teaching of a grade and character which indicates to the\nboard that the applicant is competent to practice engineering;\n3. Passed the Principles and Practice of Engineering Examination; and\n4. Either passed the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination or\ngraduated from a board-approved doctoral engineering degree program.\n(2) For the purpose of teaching engineering design cou rses only, an instructor who, on\nJanuary 1, 1999, holds a tenured or tenure -track position in an engineering program\ndefined in KRS 322.010(4)(a)3. shall be exempt from the licensure requirements of\nKRS 322.020 for the period that instructor is continuousl y employed by the\ninstitution offering that program. However, an instructor may apply and shall\nqualify for licensure as a professional engineer during this exempt period if he or\nshe:\n(a) Has graduated from an engineering program of four (4) years or more\naccredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation\nBoard for Engineering and Technology or an engineering program deemed\nequivalent by the board;\n(b) Has graduated from a board -approved doctoral engineering degree program,\nwith an  additional three (3) years or more of progressive experience in\nengineering or teaching of a grade and character which indicate to the board\nthat the applicant is competent to practice engineering; and\n(c) Has passed the Principles and Practice of Engineering Examination.\n(3) Any person having the necessary qualifications prescribed in subsection (1) or (2)\nof this section shall be eligible to apply for licensure, even if the applicant is not\npracticing the profession at the time of application.\n(4) The board shall promulgate administrative regulations to establish requirements for\nconsideration of experience gained prior to graduation from an engineering program\nas described in subsection (1)(a)1. of this section.\n(5) The board shall promulgate administrat ive regulations to establish requirements for\nconsideration of engineering topics, including engineering science or engineering\ndesign courses, as described in subsection (1)(a)1.b. of this section.","path":["KRS Chapter 322"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=56189","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:58:17Z","sha256":"ca3dc2e85eb0637c0033381c4ae359a1f759b6f8adde8d0aaec17b0d1af23dca","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-322.030","next":"us-ky/krs-322.045"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
