{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-327.010","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 327.010","heading":"Definitions for chapter.","body":"As used in this chapter, unless the context otherwise requires:\n(1) \"Active patient\" means a person who is or has been under a physical therapy plan of\ncare unless care is transferred or terminated in writing;\n(2) \"Board\" means the Board of Physical Therapy established in KRS 327.030;\n(3) \"Physical therapist\" means a professional person who has met the educational\nrequirements of this chapter and is licensed to practice physical therapy pursuant to\nthis chapter;\n(4) \"Physical therapist assistant\" means a pe rson who is licensed pursuant to this\nchapter and provides physical therapy services under the direction and supervision\nof a licensed physical therapist;\n(5) (a) \"Physical therapy\" means the use of selected knowledge and skills in\nplanning, organizing, and directing programs for the care of individuals whose\nability to function is impaired or threatened by disease or injury, which\nencompasses preventive measures, screening, tests in aid of diagnosis and\nevaluation, and invasive or noninvasive procedures wi th emphasis on the\nskeletal system, integumentary system, and neuromuscular and\ncardiopulmonary function, as it relates to physical therapy.\n(b) \"Physical therapy\" also includes:\n1. Screening or evaluations performed to determine the degree of\nimpairment o f relevant aspects such as but not limited to nerve and\nmuscle function, including subcutaneous bioelectrical potentials, motor\ndevelopment, functional capacity, and respiratory or circulatory\nefficiency; and\n2. Physical therapy treatment, which includes but is not limited to:\na. Physical therapy treatment performed upon referral by a licensed\ndoctor of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, chiropractic, or podiatry;\nb. Exercises for increasing or restoring strength, e ndurance,\ncoordination, and range of motion;\nc. Stimuli to facilitate motor activity and learning;\nd. Instruction in activities of daily living; and\ne. The use of assistive devices and the application of physical agents\nto relieve pain or alter physiological status.\n(c) \"Physical therapy\" does not include the use of:\n1. Roentgen rays and radium for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes; or\n2. Electricity for surgical purposes, including cauterization and colonic\nirrigations;\nwhich are not authorized as physical therapy in this chapter;\n(6) \"Provisional license\" means a license granted by the board to an applicant who has\nnot yet successfully completed the board-approved examination; and\n(7) \"Refer\" or \"referral\" means the procedure by which a licensed health c are provider\ndesignates the initiation of physical therapy treatment by a licensed physical\ntherapist.","path":["KRS Chapter 327"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=57286","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:58:21Z","sha256":"0312b24796dc3886b99e93cb806a19ee5c5375bc74a409e5f82ea07555d0dbdf","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-327.005","next":"us-ky/krs-327.020"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
