{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-334a.020","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 334A.020","heading":"Definitions for chapter.","body":"As used in this chapter, unless the context otherwise requires:\n(1) \"Assisting in the practice of speech pathology\" means the provision of certain\nspecific components of a speech or language service program provided by a speech-\nlanguage pathology assistant under the supervision and direction of an appropriately\nqualified supervisor;\n(2) \"Audiologist\" means one who is licensed to practice audiology. An audiologist may\ndescribe himself or herself to the public by any title or description of services\nincorporating the words \"audiologist,\" \"audiology,\" \"audiological,\" \"hearing\ncenter,\" \"hearing clinic,\" \"hearing clinician,\" \"hearing therapist,\" \"audiometry,\"\n\"audiometrist,\" \"audiometrics,\" \"otometry,\" \"otometrist,\" \"aural rehabilitationist,\"\nor \"hearing conservationist\";\n(3) \"Board\" means the Kentucky Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology;\n(4) \"Continuing professional education\" in speech -language pathology and audiology\nconsists of planned learning experiences beyond a basic educational program\nleading to a degree. These experiences are designed to promote knowledge, skills,\nand attitudes of speech -language pathology and audiology practitioners to enable\nthem to provide professional services in their areas of training that are based on\ncurrent research and best practices;\n(5) \"Interim license\" means a license issued by the board pursuant to KRS 334A.035 to\na person for the purpose of completing the supervised postgraduate professional\nexperience required under that section prior to an application for li censure as a\nspeech-language pathologist or a speech-language pathology assistant;\n(6) \"Person\" means any individual, organization, or corporate body, except that only\nindividuals can be licensed under this chapter;\n(7) \"Practice of audiology\" means the ap plication of principles, methods, and\nprocedures of measurement, testing, appraisal, prediction, consultation, counseling,\nand instruction related to hearing and disorders of hearing for the purpose of\nmodifying communicative disorders involving speech, la nguage, auditory behavior,\nor other aberrant behavior related to hearing loss; planning, directing, conducting,\nor participating in identification and hearing conservation programs; and\nhabilitative and rehabilitative programs, including hearing aid recomm endations\nand evaluation, prescribing, ordering the use of, selling and fitting hearing\ninstruments, including the selling  and fitting of both prescription hearing aids and\nover-the-counter hearing aids, auditory training, or speech reading;\n(8) \"Practice of speech pathology\" means the application of principles, methods, and\nprocedures for the measurement, testing, audiometric screening, identification,\nappraisal, determination of prognosis, evaluation, consultation, remediation,\ncounseling, instruction, a nd research related to the development and disorders of\nspeech, voice, verbal and written language, cognition/communication, or oral and\npharyngeal sensorimotor competencies for the purpose of designing and\nimplementing programs for the amelioration of the se disorders and conditions. Any\nrepresentation to the public by title or by description of services, methods, or\nprocedures for the evaluation, counseling, remediation, consultation, measurement,\ntesting, audiometric screening, identification, appraisal, instruction, and research of\npersons diagnosed with conditions or disorders affecting speech, voice, verbal, and\nwritten language, cognition/communication, or oral and pharyngeal sensorimotor\ncompetencies shall be considered to be the practice of speech-language pathology;\n(9) \"Speech-language pathologist\" means one who practices speech -language\npathology. A speech -language pathologist may describe himself or herself to the\npublic by any title or description of services incorporating the words \"speech -\nlanguage pathologist,\" \"speech -language pathology,\" \"speech -language therapy,\"\n\"speech-language correction,\" \"speech -language correctionist,\" \"speech -language\ntherapist,\" \"speech clinic,\" \"speech clinician,\" \"speech pathologist,\" \"language\npathologist,\" \"langua ge pathology,\" \"language therapist,\" \"logopedics,\"\n\"logopedist,\" \"communicology,\" \"communicologist,\" \"aphasiologist,\" \"voice\ntherapy,\" \"voice therapist,\" \"voice pathology,\" \"voice pathologist,\" \"phoniatrist,\"\n\"communication disorders,\" or \"verbal therapist\";\n(10) \"Speech-language pathology assi stant\" means one who assists in the practice of\nspeech-language pathology only under the supervision and direction of an\nappropriately qualified supervisor and only within the public school system in the\nCommonwealth. Any speech -language pathology services  provided without\nappropriate supervision or outside the public school system shall be deemed to be\nthe unlicensed practice of speech -language pathology and shall subject the\noffending party to penalties established in KRS 334A.990;\n(11) \"Supervisor\" means a person who holds a Kentucky license as a speech -language\npathologist or who holds Education Professional Standards Board master's level\ncertification as a teacher of exceptional children in the areas of speech and\ncommunication disorders as established by administrative regulation; and\n(12) \"Temporary license\" means a license that may be issued by the board administrator\npursuant to KRS 334A.181 to any applicant who has met all the requirements for\npermanent licensure in accordance with that section.","path":["KRS Chapter 334A"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=53762","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:58:23Z","sha256":"797a1c5ebd6ecf4ed0cad8a08a151c30cd429244cdab546ca39e09a986846ad0","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-334a.010","next":"us-ky/krs-334a.030"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
