{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-334a.035","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 334A.035","heading":"Interim license requirement -- Exemption for public school speech -","body":"language pathologists with teacher certification in communication disorders.\n(1) (a) A person who has a Master's degree in the area of speech -language pathology\nor communication disord ers, or is currently enrolled in a doctoral degree\nprogram with emphasis in speech -language pathology or communication\ndisorders, or has substantive equivalent course work as defined by the board's\nadministrative regulations and who has completed supervise d direct clinical\npracticum with individuals presenting a variety of disorders of communication\nand swallowing, the experience being obtained with a training institution or in\none (1) of its cooperating programs, shall apply for an interim license during\nthe time that person is completing postgraduate professional experience\ndeemed necessary by the board. The postgraduate professional experience\nshall be completed under the supervision of a speech -language pathologist\nwho holds a Kentucky license or certifi cation by other accrediting bodies, at\nthe discretion of the board.\n(b) A person with interim licensure shall make every effort to take and pass a\nnational examination in speech -language pathology approved by the board at\nthe time of the application for l icensure. If unsuccessful with the examination,\nthe licensee shall submit documentation of the applicant's preparation to take\nthe national examination and continue to practice under supervision in\naccordance with this section. The board shall promulgate a n administrative\nregulation in accordance with KRS Chapter 13A to establish the\ndocumentation required under this paragraph.\n(c) Upon completion of postgraduate professional experience deemed necessary\nby the board, the speech-language pathologist shall make an application to the\nboard within thirty (30) days for permanent licensure, if all requirements have\nbeen completed satisfactorily, or for renewal of the interim license at the\ndiscretion of the board. Failure to do so shall result in forfeiture of th e interim\nlicense.\n(d) An interim license shall not exceed a period of twenty -four (24) months\nwithout board approval.\n(2) (a) A person who has a baccalaureate degree in the area of speech -language\npathology or communication disorders as defined by administrative regulation\nshall apply for an interim license as a speech -language pathology assistant\nduring the time that person is completing his or her professional experience as\nestablished by the board by administrative regulation. The postgraduate\nprofessional experience shall be completed under the supervision of an\nappropriately qualified supervisor.\n(b) Upon completion of the postgraduate professional experience, the speech -\nlanguage pathology assistant shall make immediate application to the board\nwithin thirty (30) days for permanent licensure if all requirements have been\ncompleted satisfactorily, or for renewal of the interim license at the discretion\nof the board. Failure to do so shall result in forfeiture of the interim license.\n(c) An interim lice nse shall not exceed a period of twenty -four (24) months\nwithout board approval.\n(3) (a) A speech -language pathologist employed solely by the public schools in a\ncertified position who holds a teacher certification in communication\ndisorders issued by the Education Professional Standards Board shall be\nexempt from holding a license issued by the board.\n(b) A speech -language pathologist in a classified position who does not hold a\nteacher certification in communication disorders issued by the Education\nProfessional Standards Board shall apply for and maintain appropriate\nlicensure.\n(c) The public school speech -language pathologist shall determine from the local\nschool board how his or her position is categorized.","path":["KRS Chapter 334A"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=31894","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:58:23Z","sha256":"9375c86077d67534bd81b2e5f1c890cd57b85a0b4b9801400a977a241250de30","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-334a.034","next":"us-ky/krs-334a.040"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
