{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-335.525","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 335.525","heading":"Licensing requirements -- Fees.","body":"(1) The board shall issue a \"professional clinical counselor\" license to an applicant\nwho:\n(a) Has paid the application fee and the appropriate examination fee to the board;\n(b) Is of good moral character;\n(c) Has received a master's, specialist, or doctoral d egree in counseling or a\nrelated field from a regionally accredited institution;\n(d) Has completed a minimum of sixty (60) graduate semester hours in the\nfollowing:\n1. The helping relationship, including counseling theory and practice;\n2. Human growth and development;\n3. Lifestyle and career development;\n4. Group dynamics, process, counseling, and consulting;\n5. Assessment, appraisal, and testing of individuals;\n6. Social and cultural foundations, including multicultural issues;\n7. Principles of etiology, d iagnosis, treatment planning, and prevention of\nmental and emotional disorders and dysfunctional behavior;\n8. Research and evaluation; and\n9. Professional orientation and ethics;\n(e) Has completed a minimum of four thousand (4,000) hours of experience in the\npractice of counseling, all of which must have been obtained since obtaining\nthe master's degree and must be under approved supervision and shall include\nbut not be limited to a minimum of on e thousand six hundred (1,600) hours of\ndirect counseling with individuals, couples, families, or groups and a\nminimum of one hundred (100) hours of individual, face -to-face clinical\nsupervision with an approved supervisor. Each applicant is encouraged to\ninclude as part of the total hours of experience a minimum of ten (10) hours of\ndirect counseling with individuals in a jail or corrections setting. All\napplicants shall complete an organized practicum or internship consisting of at\nleast four hundred (400) hours; and\n(f) Has achieved passing scores on all portions of the examinations required by\nthe board.\n(2) The board may issue a \"professional counselor associate\" license to an applicant\nwho:\n(a) Has completed all requirements under paragraphs (a) to (d)  of subsection (1)\nof this section;\n(b) Has not met the requirements of paragraphs (e) or (f) of subsection (1) of this\nsection; and\n(c) Has obtained a board-approved supervisor of record.\n(3) (a) On July 15, 2002, a previously certified professional couns elor in Kentucky\nshall be entitled to use the term \"licensed professional clinical counselor\" and\nshall be issued a professional clinical counselor license upon annual renewal.\n(b) An applicant who has been issued a professional clinical counselor license\nshall be entitled to use the title \"licensed professional clinical counselor.\"\n(4) (a) On July 15, 2002, a previously certified professional counselor associate shall\nbe entitled to use the term \"licensed professional counselor associate\" and\nshall be issu ed a professional counselor associate license upon annual\nrenewal.\n(b) An applicant who has been issued a professional counselor associate license\nshall be entitled to use the title \"licensed professional counselor associate.\"\n(5) (a) A licensed profession al counselor associate shall maintain ongoing\nsupervision as approved by the board.\n(b) A licensed professional counselor associate may apply for the credential of\nlicensed professional clinical counselor upon completion of the hours of\nexperience and passing the examinations required under paragraphs (e) and (f)\nof subsection (1) of this section.\n(6) The application fee for licensure and the examination fee shall be established\npursuant to administrative regulation promulgated by the board.","path":["KRS Chapter 335"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=31961","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:58:24Z","sha256":"ad9a719c380f12ed891e6a714ad1cbd8dc63496f1dd7c512e2889dc0c976f912","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-335.520","next":"us-ky/krs-335.527"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
