{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-506.020","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 506.020","heading":"Criminal attempt -- Defense of renunciation.","body":"(1) In any prosecution for criminal attempt to commit a crime, it is a defense that, under\ncircumstances manifesting a voluntary and complete renunciation of his criminal\npurpose, the defendant abandoned his effort to commit the crime and, if mere\nabandonment was insufficient to avoid the commission of the crime, took the\nnecessary affirmative steps to prevent its commission.\n(2) A renunciation is not \"voluntary and complete\" within the meaning of this section if\nit is motivated in whole or in part by:\n(a) A belief that circumstances exist which pose a particular threat of\napprehension or detection of the accused or another participant in the criminal\nenterprise or which render more difficult the accomplishment of the criminal\npurpose; or\n(b) A decision to po stpone the criminal conduct until another time or to transfer\nthe criminal effort to another victim or another but similar object.","path":["KRS Chapter 506"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=19702","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T21:00:00Z","sha256":"dc2427aa0f9a3cd661cfa1281d6effe2f6df86df44b7f357993658988b7fcdc3","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-506.010","next":"us-ky/krs-506.030"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
