{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-527.100","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 527.100","heading":"Possession of handgun by minor.","body":"(1) A person is guilty of possession of a handgun by a minor when, being under the age\nof eighteen (18) years, he possesses, manufactures, or transports a handgun as\ndefined by KRS 527.010, except when the person is:\n(a) In attendance at a hunter's safety course or a firearms safety course;\n(b) Engaging in practice in the use of a firearm, or target shooting at an\nestablished firing range, or any other area where the discharge of a firearm is\nnot prohibited;\n(c) Engaging in an organized competition involving th e use of a firearm, or\nparticipating in or practicing for a performance by a group organized under\nSection 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code or any successor thereto\nwhich uses firearms as a part of the performance;\n(d) Hunting or trapping pursuant to  a valid license issued to him pursuant to the\nstatutes or administrative regulations of this Commonwealth;\n(e) Traveling to or from any activity described in paragraphs (a) to (d) of this\nsubsection with any unloaded handgun in his possession;\n(f) On real property which is under the control of an adult and has the permission\nof that adult and his parent or legal guardian to possess a handgun; or\n(g) At his residence and with the permission of his parent or legal guardian\npossesses a handgun and is justifie d under the principles of justification set\nforth in KRS Chapter 503 in using physical force or deadly physical force.\n(2) For the purposes of subsection (1) of this section, a handgun is \"loaded\" if:\n(a) There is a cartridge in the chamber of the handgun; or\n(b) There is a cartridge in the cylinder of the handgun, if the handgun is a\nrevolver; or\n(c) There is a cartridge in the magazine of a semiautomatic handgun, if the\nmagazine is attached to the handgun; or\n(d) The handgun and the ammunition for the han dgun, are carried on the person\nof one under the age of eighteen (18) years or are in such close proximity to\nhim that he could readily gain access to the handgun and the ammunition and\nload the handgun.\n(3) Possession of a handgun by a minor is a Class A misdemeanor for the first offense\nand a Class D felony for each subsequent offense.","path":["KRS Chapter 527"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=19964","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T21:00:04Z","sha256":"024405f6ec3cc2ba41ea4f87ef194440d15400fa6a7514acf9edefc618ee0710","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-527.090","next":"us-ky/krs-527.110"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
