{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-6.248","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 6.248","heading":"Authorization of joint primary and cosponsorship of similar bills in opposite","body":"chambers -- Petition -- Approval -- Withdrawal -- Forms.\n(1) If a bill is introduced in the Senate or the House of Representatives, and a\nsubstantially similar bill is introdu ced in the opposite chamber, the primary\nsponsors of each of the bills may jointly petition the Committee on Committees in\neach chamber to authorize joint primary and cosponsorship by members of both\nchambers of one or both bills.\n(2) The petition shall be  approved if jointly agreed to by both the Committee on\nCommittees in the Senate and the Committee on Committees in the House of\nRepresentatives. The approval shall become effective upon receipt by the Senate\nand House clerks of a properly completed form as provided in subsection (6) of this\nsection and subsequent report to both chambers of the authorized joint primary and\ncosponsorship of a bill or bills.\n(3) Upon the petition approval becoming effective, the primary sponsors and existing\ncosponsors from b oth chambers shall be listed in the Legislative Record as joint\nprimary and cosponsors of one or both bills as follows:\n(a) The primary Senate sponsor shall be listed as first sponsor of a Senate bill and\nthe primary House sponsor shall be listed as first sponsor of a House bill. The\nprimary sponsor from the opposite chamber shall be listed immediately after\nthe first sponsor.\n(b) Cosponsors from both chambers shall be listed after the primary sponsors,\nwith Senate cosponsors listed first on Senate bills and House cosponsors listed\nfirst on House bills. Cosponsors from the opposite chamber shall be listed\nimmediately after cosponsors from the chamber of origin.\n(4) Any member wishing to cosponsor a bill of the opposite chamber for which a\npetition approval h as become effective pursuant to this section may be allowed to\ncosponsor upon motion made and adopted in the chamber of that member.\n(5) Any sponsor or cosponsor of a bill, pursuant to this section, may withdraw\nsponsorship or cosponsorship upon motion mad e and adopted in the chamber of\nwhich the sponsor or cosponsor is a member.\n(6) The staff of the Legislative Research Commission shall develop a form by which\nprimary sponsors pursuant to subsection (1) of this section may jointly petition the\nSenate and House Committees on Committees and by which the Senate and House\nCommittees on Committees may, by signatures of their chairs, indicate written\napproval.","path":["KRS Chapter 6"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=293","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:48:24Z","sha256":"5c7d61e7a04e021bfdb22f99ece4a559cb6431275e554f24381431830f569af7","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-6.247","next":"us-ky/krs-6.250"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
