{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-61.887","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 61.887","heading":"Powers of TVA and commission peace officers.","body":"(1) (a) Each TVA or commission peace officer appointed and commissioned\npursuant to KRS 61.886 to 61.892 throughout every county in the\nCommonwealth in which TVA or the commission operates or owns or\ncontrols property, including leasehold interests:\n1. Shall have and exercise the powers of sheriffs in making arrests for\npublic offenses committed upon, about, or against such property or on\npublic roads and the rights -of-way passing through or over such\nproperty;\n2. Shall have and exercise the powers of sheriffs in m aking arrests in any\nsituation in which a person is placed in imminent danger of death or\nserious injury;\n3. Shall have authority to carry weapons for the reasonable purposes of his\nor her office and in performance of his or her assigned duties;\n4. While in pursuit of a person fleeing after committing an act described in\nsubparagraph 1. or 2. of this paragraph, may pursue the person and make\narrest anywhere in the Commonwealth; and\n5. Shall be subject to all the liabilities of sheriffs.\n(b) In addition to t he powers enumerated in paragraph (a) of this subsection,\ncommission peace officers shall have the power to enforce the rules and\nregulations of the commission.\n(2) TVA officers or commission peace officers appointed and commissioned pursuant\nto KRS 61.886  to 61.892 may, throughout any county in the Commonwealth in\nwhich TVA or the commission operates or owns or controls property, including\nleasehold interests, have and exercise the powers of sheriff in that county if the\nsheriff of that county provides pri or written authorization to the TVA or\ncommission defining the extent of supplemental authority being granted. Any\nsupplemental authority granted pursuant to this subsection shall expire with the\nofficer's commission granted under KRS 61.886 and may be ren ewed, as provided\nin this subsection, upon renewal of the commission authorized under KRS 61.886.\n(3) When countywide authority has not been granted under subsection (2) of this\nsection, a sheriff of a county in which the TVA or commission has property, th e\nchief of police of a city within the county, or the commissioner of the Department of\nKentucky State Police may extend peace officer authority within the city or county,\nas appropriate, during a disaster or other emergency.","path":["KRS Chapter 61"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=45408","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:49:16Z","sha256":"35c1776f46539080080d21020576811f898cf54c3f189e7484f19eb618adee44","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-61.8865","next":"us-ky/krs-61.888"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
