{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-67a.075","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 67A.075","heading":"Safety officers -- Appointment -- Duties -- Compensation.","body":"(1) The legislative body of urban -county governments may appoint as needed safety\nofficers. Safety officers shall have duties as prescribed by ordinance, which may\ninclude but not be limited to:\n(a) Issuance of citations for violation of motor vehicle offenses  as provided for in\nKRS Chapters 186 and 189, provided that safety officers shall not have the\nauthority to issue citations for moving violations.\n(b) Issuance of citations for violation of any motor vehicle or traffic safety\nordinance of the urban-county government.\n(c) Control and direction of traffic on public thoroughfares.\n(d) Removal of vehicles in violation of state or local law consistent with those\nlaws.\n(2) The ordinance prescribing the duties of safety officers shall set out the urban-county\nordinances and the sections of KRS Chapters 186 and 189 for which citation\nauthority will exist.\n(3) A safety officer may issue a citation for a misdemeanor or a violation committed in\nhis presence as provided in this section. The procedures for citations shal l be the\nsame as provided in KRS 431.015.\n(4) Safety officers appointed by authority of this section shall have only the limited\npowers as provided by this section and shall not have the powers of peace officers\nto make arrests or carry deadly weapons.\n(5) Safety officers shall successfully complete one hundred twenty (120) hours of\nappropriate training certified by the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council prior to\nbeing appointed as a safety officer.\n(6) Safety officers shall be compensated and receive employm ent benefits as provided\nby urban-county ordinance.\n(7) While in the process of securing information to complete accident reports and\nnotwithstanding any statute to the contrary, safety officers may issue citations for\nviolations of KRS 186.430, 186.450, 186.510, and 186.540.","path":["KRS Chapter 67A"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=23848","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:49:27Z","sha256":"f5ba035e984387ce8943b3c9b2b11fd3239b185e9efc14105feca512da677eb0","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-67a.070","next":"us-ky/krs-67a.076"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
