{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-70.030","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 70.030","heading":"Deputy sheriffs -- Certified court security officers -- Nonsworn personnel --","body":"Participation in Law Enforcement Foundation Program -- Appointment of\nnonsworn special inspectors.\n(1) The sheriff may appoint his or her own deputies and may revo ke the appointment at\nhis or her pleasure, except where that revocation is prohibited by the provisions of\nKRS 70.260 to 70.273. Any law to the contrary notwithstanding, a sheriff may\nappoint a deputy who resides outside the Commonwealth. In a county conta ining a\nconsolidated local government or city of the first class with a deputy sheriff merit\nboard, the term of office of a deputy shall continue from sheriff to sheriff unless a\ndeputy is removed according to the provisions of KRS 70.260 to 70.273. Before any\ndeputy executes the duties of his or her office, he or she shall take the oath required\nto be taken by the sheriff.\n(2) The sheriff may appoint his or her own certified court security officers and may\nrevoke the appointment at his or her pleasure. A certified court security officer shall\ntake an oath to faithfully perform the duties of his or her office and that he or she\npossesses the minimum qualifications under KRS 15.3971.\n(3) The sheriff may appoint nonsworn clerical, technical, professional, and support\npersonnel to assist him or her in the performance of the duties of his or her office.\nAll nonsworn personnel shall serve at the pleasure of the sheriff.\n(4) No sheriff whose county has adopted a deputy sheriff merit board under KRS\n70.260 shall app oint a deputy who is a member of the immediate family of the\nsheriff. The term \"member of the immediate family\" has the meaning given in KRS\n70.260.\n(5) Except for certified court security officers, a sheriff's office may, upon the written\nrequest of the s heriff, participate in the Kentucky Law Enforcement Foundation\nProgram Fund authorized by KRS 15.410 to 15.510 without the county establishing\na deputy sheriff merit board. This subsection shall not prohibit the sheriff from\nrequesting the consolidated loc al government or the fiscal court to establish a\ndeputy sheriff merit board.\n(6) The sheriff may appoint nonsworn special inspectors solely to perform motor\nvehicle inspections under KRS 186A.115.","path":["KRS Chapter 70"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=54982","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:49:31Z","sha256":"272d2480a90b1d8ec26ece71b207dcf4a6dfd115db14aa03f81714fe9e77a72b","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-70.020","next":"us-ky/krs-70.035"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
