{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-72.405","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 72.405","heading":"Definitions for chapter.","body":"As used in this chapter, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise:\n(1) \"Certified coroner\" or \"certified deputy coroner\" means a coroner or deputy coroner\nwho has been certified by the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet to have successfully\ncompleted both the basic training course and annual in -service training course\nrequired by KRS 72.415, except that a deputy coroner shall be certified without\ncompletion of training courses required by KRS 72.415 if he or she is a licensed\nphysician;\n(2) \"Coroner's case\" means a case in which the coroner has reasonable cause for\nbelieving that the death of a human being within his or her county was caused by\nany of the conditions set forth in KRS 72.025;\n(3) \"Coroner-ordered autopsy\" means an autopsy ordered by the c oroner having\njurisdiction and performed by a pathologist pursuant to such authorization in order\nto ascertain the cause and manner of death in a coroner's case. In the event the\npathologist deems it necessary, he or she may submit the appropriate specimen  to a\nqualified chemist or toxicologist for analysis to assist him or her in ascertaining the\ncause of death in a coroner's case;\n(4) \"Genetic tests\" means testing for genetic markers for cardiac arrhythmogenic\nsyndromes;\n(5) \"Inquest\" means an examination  ordered by the coroner, or in his or her absence,\nordered by a deputy coroner, into the causes and circumstances of any death which\nis a coroner's case by a jury of six (6) residents of the county impaneled and\nselected by the coroner to assist him or her  in ascertaining the cause and manner of\ndeath; and\n(6) \"Post-mortem examination\" means a physical examination of the body by a medical\nexaminer or by a coroner or deputy coroner who has been certified by the Justice\nand Public Safety Cabinet and may inclu de an autopsy performed by a pathologist;\nother appropriate scientific tests administered to determine cause of death,\nincluding but not limited to genetic tests; or collection of tissue samples collected\npursuant to KRS 213.161(3).","path":["KRS Chapter 72"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=54103","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:49:33Z","sha256":"1f2918c17f1ac09e0c3ba6e8b87595229260d575a9ce66c842f22e4b8e92711e","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-72.400","next":"us-ky/krs-72.410"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
