{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-83.500","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 83.500","heading":"Ordinances -- How passed -- Amendment -- Repeal -- Veto.","body":"(1) No ordinance shall embrace more than one (1) subject, and that subject shall be\nexpressed in its title.\n(2) No ordinance shall be passed at the meeting of the board of aldermen at which it is\nintroduced, nor shall it be passed at any succeeding meeting until it has been read in\nfull at that meeting and free discussion allowed thereon. Any ordinance may be\namended or repealed by another ordinance.\n(3) Every ordinance or resolution, except a resolution to adjourn, that has passed the\nboard of aldermen shall i mmediately be presented to the mayor for his approval or\ndisapproval. The mayor may disapprove any item or items of an appropriation\nmeasure; the parts approved shall be in force and the item or items disapproved\nshall be void, unless repassed in the same manner required for passage of\nordinances over the mayor's veto. If the mayor approves the ordinance or resolution,\nhe shall sign it and it shall then be in force. If he disapproves the ordinance or\nresolution, or any item of an appropriation measure, he s hall return it, with his\nobjections, to the board of aldermen, which shall enter his objections in full upon its\njournal and proceed at its next or at its second regular meeting thereafter to consider\nit. If, after such reconsideration, two -thirds (2/3) of  the members of the board of\naldermen agree to its passage, the ordinance shall be in force, but in such cases the\nvotes shall be taken by yeas and nays and recorded in the journal.\n(4) If the mayor does not sign an ordinance or resolution presented to him, and does not\nreturn it on or before the day on which the board of aldermen holds its regular\nmeeting next after the meeting at which the ordinance or resolution was passed, and\nthree (3) days have intervened between the presentation to the mayor and the\nmeeting, the ordinance or resolution shall be in force as if he had signed it.","path":["KRS Chapter 83"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=25142","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:49:44Z","sha256":"284b040cba1dfeccc74742be2078c6e26f5aca6b072af39009f465ec7e141706","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-83.490","next":"us-ky/krs-83.510"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
