{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-83.580","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 83.580","heading":"Duties and powers of mayor -- Information on city and officials to","body":"Department for Local Government -- Representation of county districts on\nboards and commissions.\n(1) The mayor shall:\n(a) Cause the ordinances of the city and the laws of the state to b e executed and\nenforced;\n(b) Communicate to the board of aldermen at least once a year a statement of the\nfinances and general condition of the affairs of the city and information in\nrelation thereto as the board of aldermen requires;\n(c) Recommend, by wri tten message to the board of aldermen, the measures he\ndeems expedient;\n(d) Fill, with the consent of the board of aldermen, all vacancies in executive and\nministerial offices and the filling of which is not otherwise provided for;\n(e) Exercise a general s upervision over all the executive and ministerial officers\nof the city and see that their official duties are honestly performed; and\n(f) No later than January 31 of each year, mail to the Department for Local\nGovernment a list containing current city info rmation including but not\nlimited to the following:\n1. The correct name of the mayor, members of the board of aldermen, and\nthe following appointed officials who are serving as of January 1 of each\nyear:\na. Clerk of the board of aldermen;\nb. City treasurer;\nc. City attorney;\nd. Finance director;\ne. Police chief;\nf. Fire chief; and\ng. Public works director;\n2. The correct name of the city, mailing address for city hall, and the\ntelephone number of city hall; and\n3. The name and telephone number of either an elected or appointed\nofficial to serve as a contact person that may be reached during normal\nbusiness hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.\n(2) The mayor shall appoint to those seats which are not subject to prior quali fication\non a board or commission an equal number of members from each county\ncommissioner's district, as created in accordance with KRS 67.045, into which the\nauthority of the board or commission extends. If there are more districts than\nmembers of a part icular board or commission, the mayor shall not appoint more\nthan one (1) member from any district. If there are more members of a particular\nboard or commission than there are districts, the mayor shall equalize appointments\nfrom among districts to the ex tent possible. The mayor shall not be required, but\nshall use his best efforts, to balance appointments from among districts on a board\nor commission if the appointments are to be made from nominees submitted by\nother groups or individuals, or if nominees shall have a professional or technical\nbackground, expertise, or membership. The mayor shall attempt to balance\nappointments from among districts on all boards and commissions to equalize\nrepresentation of all districts over the entire range of boards and commissions.\n(3) The mayor may:\n(a) Remove from office, by a written order, any officer appointed by him, unless\notherwise provided by law;\n(b) Appoint his own staff, and remove them at pleasure;\n(c) Require from any executive or ministerial officer of the  city or joint agency of\nthe city a statement in writing concerning the discharge of his duties; and\n(d) Exercise the same power to administer oaths that justices of the peace and\nother judicial officers of the state have.\n(4) The Department for Local Gove rnment shall immediately forward one (1) copy of\nthe information received from the mayor to the Legislative Research Commission.","path":["KRS Chapter 83"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=25150","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:49:44Z","sha256":"46bd15bda96497c845fd2b5a6d3fa0d556de9504db083bdfd6d4ec36055b7764","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-83.570","next":"us-ky/krs-83.590"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
