{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-96a.020","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 96A.020","heading":"Creation of authority -- Which governmental units may form or join --","body":"General powers and purposes.\n(1) A transit authority may be created and established under the provisions of this\nchapter by proceedings or joint proceedings, and the name thereof shall be \"Transit\nAuthority of .....\" If established by a city alone, or by a county alone, the name shall\nbe completed by identification of the city or county. If created and established by\njoint proceedings, the name may be completed by inserting words g enerally\nidentifying the area intended to be served, in such manner as the public bodies may\ndetermine by concert or agreement in their joint proceedings. Such transit authority\nshall constitute an agency and instrumentality for accomplishing essential\ngovernmental functions of the public body or public bodies creating and\nestablishing the same, and shall be a political subdivision and a public body\ncorporate, with power to contract and be contracted with, to sue and be sued, to\nestablish, alter and enforce rules and regulations in furtherance of the purposes of its\ncreation, to adopt, use and alter a corporate seal, and to have and exercise,\ngenerally, all of the powers of private corporations, as enumerated in KRS 271B.3 -\n020, except to the extent the same may be inconsistent with this chapter. An\nauthority shall be authorized to promote and develop mass transportation in its\ntransit area and adjoining areas, including acquisition, operation and extension of\nexisting mass transit systems; and an authority sh all have and may exercise such\npowers as may be necessary or desirable to carry out such purposes.\n(2) Subsequent to the creation and establishment of a transit authority, one (1) or more\nadditional public bodies may be permitted to join therein, in such m anner and\nsubject to such conditions as may be prescribed by the board of the authority with\nthe concurrence and approval of all public bodies which have theretofore\nparticipated in the establishment or previous enlargement of the authority.","path":["KRS Chapter 96A"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=44184","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:49:59Z","sha256":"c8f88c8702f121ba7772cc1c557f4f54baeadcc67f33dd7e5c9914dbc603c280","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-96a.010","next":"us-ky/krs-96a.030"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
