Code, Business Regulation § 4–101","heading":"","body":"(a) In this title the following words have the meanings indicated.\n(b) “Boxing” includes sparring.\n(c) “Commission” means the State Athletic Commission.\n(d) (1) “Contest” means a boxing, kick boxing, or wrestling:\n(i) competition;\n(ii) exhibition;\n(iii) match;\n(iv) performance; or\n(v) show.\n(2) “Contest” includes a mixed martial arts:\n(i) competition;\n(ii) match;\n(iii) performance; or\n(iv) show.\n(3) “Contest” does not include a mixed martial arts exhibition.\n(e) “Contestant” means an individual who participates in a boxing, professional kick boxing, amateur kick boxing, professional mixed martial arts, or amateur mixed martial arts contest.\n(f) “Mixed martial arts” means a competition in which contestants use interdisciplinary forms of fighting, including various forms of martial arts, involving:\n(1) striking with the hands, feet, knees, or elbows; and\n(2) grappling by take–downs, throws, submissions, or choke holds.\n(g) “Mixed martial arts exhibition” means mixed martial arts where:\n(1) contact to the body is permitted in only a restrained manner;\n(2) contact to the head is not permitted; and\n(3) no contact is permitted that may result, or is intended to result, in physical harm to an opponent.","path":["Article - Business Regulation"],"source_url":"https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Laws/StatuteText?article=gbr\u0026section=4-101","current_through":"2026-01-01","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T19:56:23Z","sha256":"201603fb826be500587da8652d8567fee2a575566413fe531586503f96a59235","source_id":"us-md","stale":false,"prev":"us-md/md.-code-business-regulation-3-504","next":"us-md/md.-code-business-regulation-4-201"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
