Code, Corporations and Associations § 1–502","heading":"","body":"(a) (1) The name of a corporation must include one of the following words or an abbreviation of one of the following words:\n(i) “Company”, if it is not preceded by the word “and” or a symbol for the word “and”;\n(ii) “Corporation”;\n(iii) “Incorporated”; or\n(iv) “Limited”.\n(2) If a corporation is a benefit corporation, the name of the benefit corporation must include:\n(i) The words “benefit corporation”;\n(ii) “Benefit Corp.”;\n(iii) The words “benefit company”, if not preceded by the word “and” or a symbol for the word “and”; or\n(iv) “Benefit Co.”, if not preceded by the word “and” or a symbol for the word “and”.\n(b) (1) The name of a limited liability company must include:\n(i) The words “limited liability company”;\n(ii) “L.L.C.”;\n(iii) “LLC”;\n(iv) “L.C.”; or\n(v) “LC”.\n(2) If a limited liability company is a benefit limited liability company, the name of the benefit limited liability company must include:\n(i) The words “benefit limited liability company”;\n(ii) “Benefit L.L.C.”;\n(iii) “Benefit LLC”;\n(iv) “Benefit L.C.”; or\n(v) “Benefit LC”.\n(c) The name of a limited liability partnership must include:\n(1) The words “limited liability partnership”;\n(2) “L.L.P.”; or\n(3) “LLP”.\n(d) The name of a limited partnership must include:\n(1) The words “limited partnership”;\n(2) “L.P.”; or\n(3) “LP”.\n(e) The name of a limited liability limited partnership must include:\n(1) The words “limited liability limited partnership”;\n(2) “L.L.L.P.”; or\n(3) “LLLP”.\n(f) (1) The corporate name of a professional corporation must include:\n(i) The word “chartered”;\n(ii) The abbreviation “chtd.”;\n(iii) The words “professional association”;\n(iv) The abbreviation “P.A.”;\n(v) The words “professional corporation”; or\n(vi) The abbreviation “P.C.”.\n(2) A professional corporation need not use any word specified under paragraph (1) of this subsection if:\n(i) The corporation has registered the name to be used in the manner provided in § 1–406 of this title; and\n(ii) The name is the same as its corporate name except for the allowable omissions.","path":["Article - Corporations and Associations"],"source_url":"https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Laws/StatuteText?article=gca\u0026section=1-502","current_through":"2026-01-01","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T19:56:43Z","sha256":"9599c3c0a4e2b11351202db70a1435db161f7d63971c3743b9efb80b438f4d8a","source_id":"us-md","stale":false,"prev":"us-md/md.-code-corporations-and-associations-1-501","next":"us-md/md.-code-corporations-and-associations-1-503"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
