Code, Criminal Law § 8–304","heading":"","body":"(a) A person who knows or reasonably suspects that the person is a victim of identity fraud, as prohibited under this subtitle, may contact a local law enforcement agency that has jurisdiction over:\n(1) any part of the county in which the person lives; or\n(2) any part of the county in which the crime occurred.\n(b) After being contacted by a person in accordance with subsection (a) of this section, a local law enforcement agency shall promptly:\n(1) prepare and file a report of the alleged identity fraud; and\n(2) provide a copy of the report to the victim.\n(c) The local law enforcement agency contacted by the victim may subsequently refer the matter to a law enforcement agency with proper jurisdiction.\n(d) A report filed under this section is not required to be counted as an open case for purposes including compiling open case statistics.","path":["Article - Criminal Law"],"source_url":"https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Laws/StatuteText?article=gcr\u0026section=8-304","current_through":"2026-01-01","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T19:57:08Z","sha256":"69e37bfc7079608e70316008a928b9e93da7ed8be4f320dec275dc52ccb19655","source_id":"us-md","stale":false,"prev":"us-md/md.-code-criminal-law-8-303","next":"us-md/md.-code-criminal-law-8-305"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
