Code, Criminal Procedure § 1–202","heading":"","body":"(a) (1) The court shall appoint a qualified interpreter to help a defendant in a criminal proceeding throughout any criminal proceeding when the defendant:\n(i) is deaf; or\n(ii) cannot readily understand or communicate the English language and cannot understand a charge made against the defendant or help present the defense.\n(2) On application of a victim or victim’s representative, as defined in § 11–104(a) of this article, the court shall appoint a qualified interpreter to help the victim or the victim’s representative throughout any criminal proceeding when the victim or the victim’s representative:\n(i) is deaf; or\n(ii) cannot readily understand or communicate the English language.\n(b) The court shall give an interpreter appointed under this section:\n(1) compensation for services in an amount equal to that provided for interpreters of languages other than English; and\n(2) reimbursement for actual and necessary expenses incurred in the performance of services.","path":["Article - Criminal Procedure"],"source_url":"https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Laws/StatuteText?article=gcp\u0026section=1-202","current_through":"2026-01-01","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T19:57:17Z","sha256":"78a5932cf9196d2b7453a46e02f5c60eab73c588a8283d4c51242ef3d098e949","source_id":"us-md","stale":false,"prev":"us-md/md.-code-criminal-procedure-1-201","next":"us-md/md.-code-criminal-procedure-1-203"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
