Code, Education § 7–427.1","heading":"","body":"(a) (1) In this section the following words have the meanings indicated.\n(2) “Trauma–informed approach” means a method for understanding and responding to an individual with symptoms of chronic interpersonal trauma or traumatic stress.\n(3) “Trauma–informed school” means a school that:\n(i) Acknowledges the widespread impact of trauma and understands the potential paths for recovery;\n(ii) Recognizes the signs and symptoms of trauma in students, teachers, and staff;\n(iii) Integrates information about trauma into policies, procedures, and practices; and\n(iv) Actively resists retraumatizing a student, teacher, or staff member who has experienced trauma.\n(b) (1) The Department, in consultation with the Maryland Department of Health and the Department of Human Services, shall develop guidelines on a trauma–informed approach that will assist schools with:\n(i) Implementing a comprehensive trauma–informed policy at the school;\n(ii) The identification of a student, teacher, or staff member who has experienced trauma;\n(iii) The appropriate manner for responding to a student, teacher, or staff member who has experienced trauma;\n(iv) For schools participating in the Handle With Care program, the appropriate manner for responding to a student who is identified as a “handle with care” student; and\n(v) Becoming a trauma–informed school.\n(2) The Department shall:\n(i) Distribute the guidelines developed under this subsection to each local school system; and\n(ii) Publish the guidelines on the trauma–informed approach on the Department’s website.","path":["Article - Education"],"source_url":"https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Laws/StatuteText?article=ged\u0026section=7-427.1","current_through":"2026-01-01","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T19:57:38Z","sha256":"83b5bd0ce2bfd78b244dd75deb7cc6251820c5aeb466277bed1252198a1d75fd","source_id":"us-md","stale":false,"prev":"us-md/md.-code-education-7-427","next":"us-md/md.-code-education-7-428"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
