Code, Estates and Trusts § 2–203","heading":"","body":"(a) Except as provided in subsection (d) of this section with respect to an estate being administered or about to be administered in the office of the register, a register, deputy, clerk, or any other employee may not ask for, take, or receive from a person a fee, commission, gratuity, gift, or reward for performing a service.\n(b) The service referred to in subsection (a) of this section includes:\n(1) Giving advice;\n(2) Referring business;\n(3) Performing a service other than for actual expenses of travel incurred in connection with the probate of a will; or\n(4) Acting as agent, representative or in any other capacity for a surety corporation for which compensation is given directly or indirectly.\n(c) Any person who violates any provision of this section is guilty of a misdemeanor and on conviction is subject to a fine not exceeding $1,000 for each offense.\n(d) This section does not apply to the payment of a fee authorized by § 2–206 of this subtitle.","path":["Article - Estates and Trusts"],"source_url":"https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Laws/StatuteText?article=get\u0026section=2-203","current_through":"2026-01-01","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T19:58:07Z","sha256":"608e7155d134a47c2ddf59761411bb54f2b99575b2eba2e01d284cf05e4910fc","source_id":"us-md","stale":false,"prev":"us-md/md.-code-estates-and-trusts-2-202.1","next":"us-md/md.-code-estates-and-trusts-2-204"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
