Code, Family Law § 5–101","heading":"","body":"(a) In this title the following words have the meanings indicated.\n(b) “Adoptive parent” means an individual who completes adoption of another individual.\n(c) “Child placement agency” means:\n(1) a local department; or\n(2) a private agency that is licensed by the Social Services Administration of the Department under § 5–507 of this title, or by a comparable governmental unit of another state, to place children.\n(d) “Crime of violence”:\n(1) has the meaning stated in § 14–101 of the Criminal Law Article; or\n(2) as to a crime committed in another state, means a crime that, if committed in this State, would be a crime of violence as defined in § 14–101 of the Criminal Law Article.\n(e) “Department” means the State Department of Human Services.\n(f) “Disability” means:\n(1) alcohol dependence, as defined in § 8–101 of the Health – General Article;\n(2) drug dependence, as defined in § 8–101 of the Health – General Article;\n(3) a mental disorder, as defined in § 10–101 of the Health – General Article; or\n(4) intellectual disability, as defined in § 7–101 of the Health – General Article.","path":["Article - Family Law"],"source_url":"https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Laws/StatuteText?article=gfl\u0026section=5-101","current_through":"2026-01-01","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T19:58:17Z","sha256":"b428fb4cd1234f4248e9e247a194bd885d7398704f273381f4fef08349a90ea7","source_id":"us-md","stale":false,"prev":"us-md/md.-code-family-law-4-707","next":"us-md/md.-code-family-law-5-201"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
