Code, Family Law § 9–301","heading":"","body":"(a) In this subtitle the following words have the meanings indicated.\n(b) (1) “Lawful custodian” means a person who is authorized to have custody of and exercise control over a child who is under the age of 16 years.\n(2) “Lawful custodian” includes a person who is authorized to have custody by an order of a court of competent jurisdiction in this State or any other state.\n(c) “Relative” means:\n(1) a parent;\n(2) a grandparent or other ancestor;\n(3) a brother;\n(4) a sister;\n(5) an aunt;\n(6) an uncle; or\n(7) an individual who was a lawful custodian before the commission of an act that violates § 9-304 or § 9-305 of this subtitle.","path":["Article - Family Law"],"source_url":"https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Laws/StatuteText?article=gfl\u0026section=9-301","current_through":"2026-01-01","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T19:58:17Z","sha256":"8ca7917bf937d6dd31f64cb71a57c6446cb07ccc2284ba94c4a062e2f8ff2852","source_id":"us-md","stale":false,"prev":"us-md/md.-code-family-law-9-202","next":"us-md/md.-code-family-law-9-302"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
