Code, General Provisions § 1–111","heading":"","body":"(a) In this Code and any regulation or directive adopted under it, “legal holiday” means:\n(1) January 1, for New Year’s Day;\n(2) (i) January 15, for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday; or\n(ii) if the United States Congress designates another day for observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday, the day designated by the United States Congress;\n(3) February 12, for Lincoln’s birthday;\n(4) the third Monday in February, for Washington’s birthday;\n(5) March 25, for Maryland Day;\n(6) Good Friday;\n(7) (i) May 30, for Memorial Day; or\n(ii) if the United States Congress designates another day for observance of Memorial Day, the day designated by the United States Congress;\n(8) June 19, for Juneteenth National Independence Day;\n(9) July 4, for Independence Day;\n(10) the first Monday in September, for Labor Day;\n(11) September 12, for Defenders’ Day;\n(12) (i) October 12, for Columbus Day; or\n(ii) if the United States Congress designates another day for observance of Columbus Day, the day designated by the United States Congress;\n(13) November 11, for Veterans’ Day;\n(14) the fourth Thursday in November, for Thanksgiving Day;\n(15) the Friday after Thanksgiving Day, for American Indian Heritage Day;\n(16) December 25, for Christmas Day;\n(17) each statewide general election day in the State; and\n(18) each other day that the President of the United States or the Governor designates for general cessation of business.\n(b) Except as otherwise expressly provided in the Code, a legal holiday shall be observed on:\n(1) the date specified in subsection (a) of this section; or\n(2) if that date falls on a Sunday, on the next Monday after that date.","path":["Article - General Provisions"],"source_url":"https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Laws/StatuteText?article=ggp\u0026section=1-111","current_through":"2026-01-01","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T19:58:37Z","sha256":"04358c86450fecc60bab88ad60f34eb69d1986b58175ebeb5d6cc60d6396cfaa","source_id":"us-md","stale":false,"prev":"us-md/md.-code-general-provisions-1-110","next":"us-md/md.-code-general-provisions-1-112"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
