Code, Health - General § 18–307","heading":"","body":"(a) This section does not apply to a woman who objects to a standard serological syphilis test because the test is against the religious beliefs and practices of the woman.\n(b) (1) The health care provider attending a woman for pregnancy shall submit to a medical laboratory:\n(i) A blood sample taken from the woman at the time that the health care provider first examines the woman;\n(ii) A blood sample taken from the woman in the third trimester at:\n1. The prenatal visit at 28 weeks of gestation; or\n2. The first prenatal visit after 28 weeks of gestation; and\n(iii) 1. A blood sample taken from the woman who delivers a live born infant at the time of delivery; or\n2. A blood sample taken from the woman who delivers a stillborn infant:\nA. At 20 weeks of gestation or later; or\nB. Weighing at least 500 grams.\n(2) The medical laboratory to which a blood sample is submitted shall do a standard serological syphilis test that is approved by the Department.\n(c) A hospital shall determine the syphilis serologic status of the mother\nbefore discharging the newborn for the purposes of neonatal evaluation and\ntreatment.\n(d) The Department may adopt rules, regulations, and standards under this\nsection.","path":["Article - Health - General"],"source_url":"https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Laws/StatuteText?article=ghg\u0026section=18-307","current_through":"2026-01-01","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T19:58:48Z","sha256":"7b6d5367c04707760a5dbef5c7e5bf706b74629fb1bd05351aac27eac6e5f3ce","source_id":"us-md","stale":false,"prev":"us-md/md.-code-health-general-18-304","next":"us-md/md.-code-health-general-18-308"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
