Code, Health Occupations § 8–514","heading":"","body":"(a) (1) In this section the following words have the meanings indicated.\n(2) “Clinical nurse specialist” means an individual who:\n(i) 1. Is licensed by the Board to practice registered nursing; or\n2. Has a multistate licensure privilege to practice registered nursing under the Nurse Licensure Compact; and\n(ii) Is certified by the Board to practice as a clinical nurse specialist.\n(3) (i) “Practice as a clinical nurse specialist” means to:\n1. Provide direct care to patients with complex needs;\n2. Act as a consultant to another health care provider as needed;\n3. Conduct health–related research; and\n4. Provide education and guidance for staff nurses.\n(ii) “Practice as a clinical nurse specialist” includes:\n1. Ordering, performing, and interpreting laboratory tests;\n2. Ordering diagnostic tests and using the findings or results in the care of patients;\n3. Prescribing drugs and durable medical equipment under regulations adopted by the Board;\n4. Ordering home health and hospice care; and\n5. Initiating, monitoring, and altering appropriate therapies or treatments.\n(b) Practice as a clinical nurse specialist is governed by rules and regulations that are adopted under § 8–205 of this title and that concern additional acts in the practice of registered nursing.","path":["Article - Health Occupations"],"source_url":"https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Laws/StatuteText?article=gho\u0026section=8-514","current_through":"2026-01-01","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T19:58:58Z","sha256":"536bb182fcc243633d7265441e33346cd0c3246b3d84115daa9a18e99c50738f","source_id":"us-md","stale":false,"prev":"us-md/md.-code-health-occupations-8-513","next":"us-md/md.-code-health-occupations-8-515"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
