Code, Human Services § 5–415","heading":"","body":"(a) (1) A local department may pay the reasonable funeral expenses of a decedent who was a:\n(i) recipient of public assistance, including temporary cash assistance or public assistance to adults; or\n(ii) State resident receiving Supplemental Security Income under Title XVI of the Social Security Act.\n(2) The funeral expenses paid by the local department may not exceed $900.\n(b) A local department may not pay funeral expenses under this section unless:\n(1) each person legally responsible for the support of the decedent is unable to pay the expenses; and\n(2) other resources, including available death benefits of the estate, are insufficient to pay the expenses.\n(c) Payments provided in accordance with this section shall be charged to State funds.","path":["Article - Human Services"],"source_url":"https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Laws/StatuteText?article=ghu\u0026section=5-415","current_through":"2026-01-01","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T19:59:17Z","sha256":"c4ac6819f9af2e0f9b411e49e98ceedaa557339e579ed65e1cbb60e90175b269","source_id":"us-md","stale":false,"prev":"us-md/md.-code-human-services-5-412","next":"us-md/md.-code-human-services-5-501"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
