Code, Insurance § 8–401","heading":"","body":"(a) In this subtitle the following words have the meanings indicated.\n(b) “Benefit contract” means the agreement for provision of benefits authorized by § 8-432 of this subtitle.\n(c) “Benefit member” means an adult member who is designated by the laws or rules of a society to be a benefit member under a benefit contract.\n(d) “Certificate” means the document issued as written evidence of a benefit contract.\n(e) “Laws” means a society’s articles of incorporation, constitution, and bylaws, however designated.\n(f) “Lodge” means subordinate member units of a society, known as camps, courts, councils, branches, or by any other designation.\n(g) “Premiums” means premiums, rates, dues, or other required contributions by whatever name known that are payable under a certificate.\n(h) “Rules” means all rules, regulations, or resolutions adopted by the supreme governing body or board of directors of a society which are intended to have general application to the members of the society.\n(i) Unless the context requires otherwise, “society” means fraternal benefit society.","path":["Article - Insurance"],"source_url":"https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Laws/StatuteText?article=gin\u0026section=8-401","current_through":"2026-01-01","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T19:59:28Z","sha256":"aa2017e5c1265b5d4d3ef769bce0a13e168c1aa14f04267f9fa0a2f45e8dccaa","source_id":"us-md","stale":false,"prev":"us-md/md.-code-insurance-8-322","next":"us-md/md.-code-insurance-8-402"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
