Code, Labor and Employment § 3–714","heading":"","body":"(a) (1) In this section the following words have the meanings indicated.\n(2) “Eligible veteran” means a veteran, as defined in § 9–901 of the State Government Article, who has received an honorable discharge or a certificate of satisfactory completion of service, including:\n(i) a reserve component;\n(ii) the Commissioned Corps of the Public Health Service; and\n(iii) the Commissioned Corps of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.\n(3) “Employer” includes a county or municipal corporation.\n(b) Subject to subsection (d) of this section, an employer may grant a preference in hiring and promotion to:\n(1) an eligible veteran;\n(2) the spouse of an eligible veteran who has a service–connected disability;\n(3) the spouse of an eligible active service member; or\n(4) the surviving spouse of a deceased eligible veteran.\n(c) Granting a preference under subsection (b) of this section does not violate any State or local equal employment opportunity law.\n(d) If an employer that is a county or municipal corporation chooses to grant a preference under subsection (b) of this section, the county or municipal corporation may adopt a local law that provides for the hiring and promotion preference before implementing the preference.","path":["Article - Labor and Employment"],"source_url":"https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Laws/StatuteText?article=gle\u0026section=3-714","current_through":"2026-01-01","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T19:59:38Z","sha256":"02418e025734920a8cf58d8085711470d6abdc8dc8ba650be60d74433098337c","source_id":"us-md","stale":false,"prev":"us-md/md.-code-labor-and-employment-3-713","next":"us-md/md.-code-labor-and-employment-3-715"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
