Code, Labor and Employment § 9–101","heading":"","body":"(a) In this title the following words have the meanings indicated.\n(b) “Accidental personal injury” means:\n(1) an accidental injury that arises out of and in the course of employment;\n(2) an injury caused by a willful or negligent act of a third person directed against a covered employee in the course of the employment of the covered employee; or\n(3) a disease or infection that naturally results from an accidental injury that arises out of and in the course of employment, including:\n(i) an occupational disease; and\n(ii) frostbite or sunstroke caused by a weather condition.\n(c) “Child” includes:\n(1) an adopted child;\n(2) an illegitimate child;\n(3) a posthumous child; and\n(4) a stepchild.\n(d) “Commission” means the State Workers’ Compensation Commission.\n(e) (1) “Compensation” means the money payable under this title to a covered employee or the dependents of a covered employee.\n(2) “Compensation” includes funeral benefits payable under this title.\n(f) “Covered employee” means an individual listed in Subtitle 2 of this title for whom a person, a governmental unit, or a quasi-public corporation is required by law to provide coverage under this title.\n(g) “Occupational disease” means a disease contracted by a covered employee:\n(1) as the result of and in the course of employment; and\n(2) that causes the covered employee to become temporarily or permanently, partially or totally incapacitated.","path":["Article - Labor and Employment"],"source_url":"https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Laws/StatuteText?article=gle\u0026section=9-101","current_through":"2026-01-01","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T19:59:38Z","sha256":"c4e3502962866e2be807506f53f18ba98a5907d8db8aba5a3c5c909c2ae39129","source_id":"us-md","stale":false,"prev":"us-md/md.-code-labor-and-employment-8.5-107","next":"us-md/md.-code-labor-and-employment-9-102"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
