Code, Land Use § 8–101","heading":"","body":"(a) In this title the following words have the meanings indicated.\n(b) “Appurtenance and environmental setting” includes:\n(1) paved or unpaved walkways and driveways;\n(2) trees;\n(3) landscaping;\n(4) pastures;\n(5) croplands;\n(6) waterways; and\n(7) rocks.\n(c) “Commission” includes a historic district commission or a historic preservation commission.\n(d) “Demolition” includes any willful neglect in the maintenance and repair of a structure, other than the appurtenance and environmental setting of the structure, that:\n(1) is not due to a financial inability to maintain and repair the structure; and\n(2) threatens to result in a substantial deterioration of the exterior features of the structure.\n(e) “District” means a significant concentration, linkage, or continuity of sites, structures, or objects united historically or aesthetically by plan or development.\n(f) “Person” includes a unit of local government.\n(g) “Routine maintenance” means work that:\n(1) does not alter the exterior fabric or features of a site or structure; and\n(2) has no material effect on the historical, archaeological, or architectural significance of the site or structure.\n(h) “Site” means the location of:\n(1) an event of historic significance; or\n(2) a structure or ruin that possesses historic, archaeological, or cultural significance.\n(i) (1) “Structure” means a combination of material to form a construction that is stable.\n(2) “Structure” includes:\n(i) a building;\n(ii) a stadium;\n(iii) a reviewing stand;\n(iv) a platform;\n(v) staging;\n(vi) an observation tower;\n(vii) a radio tower;\n(viii) a water tank or tower;\n(ix) a trestle;\n(x) a bridge;\n(xi) a pier;\n(xii) paving;\n(xiii) a bulkhead;\n(xiv) a wharf;\n(xv) a shed;\n(xvi) a coal bin;\n(xvii) a shelter;\n(xviii) a fence;\n(xix) a display sign that is visible or intended to be visible from a public way; and\n(xx) a part of a structure.","path":["Article - Land Use"],"source_url":"https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Laws/StatuteText?article=glu\u0026section=8-101","current_through":"2026-01-01","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T19:59:47Z","sha256":"3da298c5eefcad07abf9289e59ff54212365f0a72f012aecaa4e37d3df121b22","source_id":"us-md","stale":false,"prev":"us-md/md.-code-land-use-7-509","next":"us-md/md.-code-land-use-8-102"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
