Code, Local Government § 1–205","heading":"","body":"(a) If a municipality, county, or other political subdivision of the State\nmakes appointments to government positions under a civil service or merit system\nlaw or ordinance, the unit that provides eligibility lists for appointments shall adopt\nrules or regulations to grant special credit to honorably discharged veterans who have\nbeen residents of the State for at least 5 years immediately preceding the date on\nwhich the veteran takes a merit system examination.\n(b) (1) The unit may determine the nature and extent of the special\ncredit granted to veterans.\n(2) The unit may grant a greater credit to veterans with a disability\nthan to veterans who do not have a disability.\n(c) The credit granted to a veteran under this section may be extended to:\n(1) the spouse of a veteran if the veteran is unable to qualify for merit\nsystem appointment because of a disability; and\n(2) the unmarried surviving spouse of a deceased veteran.\n(d) (1) In this subsection, “health emergency” includes:\n(i) a national emergency declared by the President of the\nUnited States under the National Emergencies Act;\n(ii) an emergency or major disaster declared by the President\nof the United States under the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency\nAssistance Act;\n(iii) a public health emergency declared by the Secretary of\nHealth and Human Services under 42 U.S.C. § 247d; and\n(iv) a catastrophic health emergency declared by the Governor\nunder § 14–3A–02 of the Public Safety Article.\n(2) The unit may exempt war or health emergency veterans under\nthe age of 55 years from any age limitation or requirement.","path":["Article - Local Government"],"source_url":"https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Laws/StatuteText?article=glg\u0026section=1-205","current_through":"2026-01-01","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T19:59:58Z","sha256":"fb558c1311842a4aabeebf7b720eebcd68a5cfb3da5a1bb7ec9c0024b0216a4d","source_id":"us-md","stale":false,"prev":"us-md/md.-code-local-government-1-204","next":"us-md/md.-code-local-government-1-206"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
